GRAHAM — Nearly 900 illegal immigrants who are heads of household in Alamance County receive food stamp electronic benefit transfer cards monthly, based on federal requirements to provide benefits to others living in their household who qualify.

Alamance County Department of Social Services Director Susan Osborne said on Thursday during a county DSS board meeting that illegal immigrants who receive the cards aren’t supposed to use the cards for themselves.

The racial makeup of the county was 75.61% White, 18.76% Black or African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.19% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 6.75% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 51,584 households out of which 31.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.10% were married couples living together, 12.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.10% were non-families. 26.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the county the population was spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 9.90% from 18 to 24, 29.90% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $39,168, and the median income for a family was $46,479. Males had a median income of $31,906 versus $23,367 for females. The per capita income for the county was $19,391. About 7.60% of families and 11.10% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.30% of those under age 18 and 12.90% of those age 65 or over.

Yes, I could google it every time such an article is posted, which is sometimes multiple times daily. But there are same county names in different states. Seems silly to have to research it, when the newspapers could just type in state name one time in article, which was more my point.

Wow that is close to 4 million a year (3,723,336) to IA's in the county.

We need a national law where IA's with children get 6 mths of help then they would be reported to the authorties. Or they get physical supplies like milk,cereal etc. for their children but NO debit card.

Most able bodied citizens on welfare are encouraged to get a job but IA's cannot work so it is a no win situation with them.

Come on people! Do you think a government that welcomes illegal invaders in with open arms, and refuses to enforce immigration law is going to let these people starve! ALL of them are collecting welfare on behalf of their anchor babies and our government is fine with it and it's going on in every state!
