Four people are dead and seven others are facing life threatening injuries after the driver of a minivan fled from Border Patrol on Sunday
The crash happened around 8 a.m. after the driver of a Mercury minivan saw a Border Patrol unit nearby.
The driver immediately fled north on F.M. 493 towards Donna.
According to Border Patrol, at about three miles south of town, the driver lost control, struck a tree and swerved into a sugar cane field.
Agents found 11 people in the vehicle. Four were pronounced dead at the scene and the seven other passengers were taken to various Valley hospitals. Two had to be airlifted.
ICE Homeland Security Investigators, Texas Department of Public Safety, Donna PD and Border Patrol are investigating the accident.
Border Patrol Chief Henry Mendiola said that it is still too early to tell, but preliminary indicators show that this was a group of undocumented immigrants.

Oct 8, 2012 4:28pm
Associated Press
DONNA, Texas (AP) — Authorities say four people died and seven remain hospitalized after a van carrying suspected illegal immigrants crashed in South Texas.
Border Patrol spokesman Henry Mendiola says agents saw the van load up Sunday morning near the Rio Grande. When the van spotted a Border Patrol vehicle, it took off fast, before the agent could engage it.
Mendiola says the minivan wrecked off in a sugarcane field south of Donna. He says the victims were from Honduras and El Salvador. Five remain hospitalized in stable condition in area hospitals.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations is leading the probe into the human smuggling operation. Spokeswoman Adelina Pruneda says two survivors were transferred to San Antonio with severe injuries. Special agents were waiting to interview the survivors.
