Illegal immigration a thorny issue for local police force

Jose Castillo has been in the Floyd County Jail since July 2009. Sentenced to 10 years on a child molestation charge in Floyd County Superior Court, there is also a hold on him from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.

Castillo is one of seven inmates in the jail who are possibly in the country illegally, according to ICE officials.

Some were stopped in traffic stops and were found not to have a valid driver’s license. Others are housed for more serious charges.

But even though Castillo is suspected of being in the country illegally, he will not be tried on deportation charges until he serves his sentence with the state, said Lt. Scott Knight of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office.
