For Calif. Great-Grandmother, Opposites Attract

California cops say Julio Cesar Jacobo-Curiel strangled 75-year-old Mimi Rohwer, a woman he lived with in San Marcos, Calif. for two years.

When Mimi Rohwer met Julio Jacobo-Curiel nearly five years ago, they seemed like an unlikely match. Mimi was a high priestess in the Wicca religion, and Jacobo-Curiel was a day laborer that the then 70-year-old Rohwer had commissioned to do some work around her home. But soon enough, the relationship grew and Jacobo-Curiel moved in, much to Mimi's family's dismay.

For years, cops say Jacobo-Curiel rarely worked and rarely socialized with Mimi's family or her neighbors at the San Marcos, Calif. mobile home park they called home.

By the latter part of 2007, the relationship was deteriorating, and Mimi wanted Jacobo-Curiel out of her home -- but he wasn't budging. She began making calls to immigration and in January 2008, she called the San Diego Sheriff's Dept. for assistance. Mimi's family asked if she was worried about Julio becoming violent, and she said that while he had a temper, she doubted he would ever hurt her.

A Manhunt Begins For Jacobo-Curiel

On January 23, 2008, San Marcos police went to the Rohwer home to conduct a welfare check. Mimi's daughter hadn't heard from her for a few days, which was unusual for the tight-knit family. The doors and windows were locked, and no one answered the door, but cops were able to force a sliding glass door open. Once inside, they made a chilling discovery: Mimi Rohwer was dead in Jacobo-Curiel's bedroom.

Investigators soon found out that 57-year-old Jacobo-Curiel was seen driving Mimi's red Toyota Camry the night before police discovered her remains. Authorities also believe that later that same night, he unsuccessfully tried to use Mimi's credit cards. Mimi's car was later found ditched in nearby Escondido, Calif.

Cops tell AMW that Jacobo-Curiel is an illegal immigrant from Mexico and told people that he couldn't return to the country because he's wanted for murder, but police have not been able to verify if this claim is true or not. Investigators believe that Julio Jacobo-Curiel may still be in the U.S., possibly in Las Vegas, and working as a gardener, a day laborer, or a cook.
