Immigration issue flares in Minnesota congressional race

ST. PAUL (AP) Immigration is shaping up as an issue in southern Minnesota's 1st Congressional District race.

Republican Dick Day a state senator from Owatonna (oh-wuh-TAHN'-uh) is one of several candidates vying for the GOP nomination for Congress.

Day is trying to elevate immigration issues in a campaign to unseat freshman Congressman Tim Walz, who's a Democrat.

At the invitation of the anti-open border Minutemen Project, Day recently spent three days in the Arizona desert. Day says the U.S.

border with Mexico is a "sieve," but he believes if the federal government wanted to shut the border off, it could.

Walz plans a trip to the southern border soon.
