Good help and good health

More than 1,200 people attended a health fair yesterday for Hispanics in Central Kentucky. The event, called "Dia de la Mujer Latina" -- the Day of the Latin Woman -- honored women through leadership awards and provided free health services.

A mobile Mexican Consulate was on hand to help Mexicans obtain identification cards. Local businesses and community organizations sponsored the first-time event.

The event helped people who did not know where to go for basic needs like obtaining identification, said Maria Almario-Rosenbaum, an immigrant outreach specialist with Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center and a chairwoman for the event.

Several agencies participated, including the Lexington health department, University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center, St. Joseph's Hospital and the Maxwell Legal Clinic.

"We felt the agencies in Lexington are very interested in servicing the (Hispanic) community," Almario-Rosenbaum said.
