Good weekend for Brewer, Arpaio, and Pearce
A good weekend for Arpaio, Pearce and Brewer
ArizonaCentral.com
Laurie Roberts is a columnist for The Arizona Republic.
Over and over again, I hear Democrats and independents talking about how the pendulum is shifting, how Arizona is returning to a more moderate stance.
And then Sheriff Joe Arpaio raises $1.1 million in contributions last year with an astounding $6 million in his campaign account -- granted, with the largest share of those contributions coming from California last year but from Arizona over the two-year cycle.
And then Gov. Jan Brewer touts last week's finger-in-the-face gesture at a meeting of the state Republican Party, to an appreciative applause not just of Republican activists but from rank and filers who say he deserved it.
And then Russell Pearce, of late recalled from his legislative seat, is voted in over the weekend as No. 2 guy in the Arizona Republican Party, with 60 percent of the vote.
Either news of our state's moderation is greatly exaggerated or the Republican Party is becoming more out of step with Arizona as a whole.
I tend to thiink it's the latter, as two thirds of this state's voters are registered either as indepedents or Democrats. But then, a great number of those two thirds don't bother to vote,
Give credit to the GOP faithful, they do line up to vote. And they don't seem interested in finding middle ground.
Because they don't need to.
