GOP must tone down rhetoric to woo Latinos

It isn’t as if Republicans weren’t warned.

For years — especially as conservatives’ rants against immigration seemed to lose any distinction between illegal and legal residents — Republican Hispanic media consultant Frank Guerra sounded the alarm for Republicans to back off.

As one who had worked for the 2000 and 2004 campaigns of George W. Bush, and the 2002 reelection of Bush’s brother, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Guerra fearedRepublicans’ harsh rhetoric on immigration would cost them the Hispanic support that was critical to the Bush victories. Bush adviser Karl Rove and 2008 Republican nominee John McCain were at the forefront of that argument but were a minority inside the GOP.

Of course, Guerra — McCain’s Hispanic media adviser this year — was proved right on Election Day.

While the economy was the top concern of Latino voters, the immigration hardliners’ rhetoric motivated them to get involved in the election.

The nativist, anti-immigrant attitudes chilled even Latino citizens who support border enforcement, Guerra observed, and Hispanics voted against McCain, a longtime friend of Latinos.

Unless Republicans change their tone and help fix the immigration system before the next presidential election, their downhill slide with Latinos will “not even be for the foreseeable future but for good,â€

What rhetoric??? That we want to protect our borders???? This is exactly how we got where we are. No one is saying anything bad about hispanics. Just so happens 98% of illegals coming into our country are from Mexico. Never in the history of America have we or we will be dominated by one country of "origin." When they talk about country of immigrants, yes we are ALL DIFFERENT COUNTRYS NOT ONLY MEXICO!!!!! Quit pandering to these people.

Translation: Cave on the illegal invasion, and everything will come up roses for the GOP. Here's a better solutuion - just stop the illegal invasion, and end birthright citizenship.

More myths spouted by Munoz and the open borders cabal. And opposing illegal immigration is not "insulting" anybody. See this:

    Bull Hockey!

The Democrats were running around and getting elected to Congress by pretending to be tough on illegal immigartion. Obviously, Gebe Martinez didn't notice that and is not reporting but injecting his Liberal agenda and pro-illegal alien support by trying to deter the Republicans from saving this country. Gebe is a Democrat Mouthpiece.

Try this one on Gebe Martines, it's the Democrats fault we have a problem with illegal immigration they keep inviting them in, with promises of a path to citizenship, the Dream Act and the Golden Egg of Amnesty!!!!!! Democrats have created the problem!

Oh and the Constitution doesn't say that the Hispanic vote is the most important or the only one that matters.

That's hysterical, because McCain's pandering to the hispanics is what cost him the race. As much as I hate McCain, I would have voted for him had he shown he would represent the wishes of 90% of Americans in border control and no amnesty for criminals who have invaded this country. Instead, he proved he wanted to be another Bush type dictator; not giving a damn what the country wants.

McCain would have won in a heartbeat if he had accepted a pro America agenda rather than an anti America agenda.

And one other thing, these guys are totally out of touch with reality. Hispanics will always go overwhelmingly for democratic candidates. Demos lean towards socialism, and anyone that comes to the US illegally for the free ride they get, will be looking more towards socialist candidates that candidates wanting them to pay their way. If you are going to commit breaking and entering, do you want to pay for it or get a free ride??

[quote]Obama’s strongest Hispanic support came from those born in Mexico and the Dominican Republic and those under the age of 30, according to Florida-based Hispanic pollster Sergio Bendixen. Almost two-thirds of those surveyed said the Â*immigration issue was “very importantâ€

What a silly, simple-minded assertion. The only people who refuse to differentiate between legal and illegal immigrants are the supporters of illegals in the government, media, and lobbyist wing of D.C.

Disregarding legal and illegal status is the necessary omission for a dishonest pressure group to paint immigration enforcement as "racism".
