GOP platform gets tougher on immigration

TAMPA, Fla.— Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach persuaded the Republican platform committee Tuesday to toughen its language on immigration.

“We recognize that if you really want to create a job tomorrow, you can remove an illegal alien today,” he told the 100-plus representatives to the committee. “That is the way to open up jobs very quickly for U.S. citizen workers and lawfully admitted alien workers.”

The committee agreed to restore 2008 platform planks that didn’t appear in a draft prepared by Republican National Committee staff, who worked in close consultation with Mitt Romney’s campaign.

The platform committee overwhelmingly voted to add language proposed by Kobach calling for the completion of a border fence, the end of in-state tuition for illegal immigrants and an end to sanctuary cities. It also voted to support national E-Verify, an Internet database run by the federal government that makes it harder for undocumented workers to get jobs.

Trying to make inroads with Latino votes, Romney has toned down the hardline rhetoric he used in the primaries. The GOP convention is also being held in the key state of Florida, which is home to a large population of Hispanic voters that Republicans realize are key to the party’s electoral chances and future.

Kobach, who wrote Arizona's and Alabama’s controversial immigration laws, reminded the group of Republicans in a ballroom at the Marriott hotel here of Romney’s stated positions on the hot-button issue

“These positions are consistent with the Romney campaign,” he said. “As you all will remember one of the primary reasons that Gov. Romney rose past Gov. [Rick] Perry when Mr. Perry was achieving first place in the polls was because of his opposition to in-state tuition for illegal aliens.”

Kobach quoted a passage from Romney’s website that says the soon-to-be GOP nominee will build a high-tech fence and eliminate the magnets for illegal immigration.

The Republicans say a lot of things, but no action on illegal immigration, remains no action, and besides Mitt Romney waffles on the issue of illegal immigration on his own campaign website. Illegal immigration is an issue he refuses to discuss openly on the campaign trail.

Im glad Kris Kobach was able to reverse this move by the RINO's around the RNC and Mitt Romney. Good score for our team against their effort to create a GOP amnesty environment for illegals.

According to Kobach, Mitt Romney supports everything that is being added to the platform, which is a good thing in Romney's favor.

You are right about it is an invasion. An invasion legitimized through inference with the 1986 amnesty. I beleived that the phrase "war on drugs" was the right phrase, but practiced wrong. Combine all this with your posts his morn, Newmxican, abot Hidalgo Co, TX, and the possibility of huge campaign contributions to the sheriff from cartels, as proposed by "whistle blowrers." We are going to have to face the fact that cartel money is as serious about politial influence here as well as in Mexico. They will buy that influenhce or kill us for it. Open border policy has made getting their wares and people quite easy into U.S. Combine this with Mo. candidate for Senate beng told by the top of the party ticket to drop out of th race, well, Mo. voters will decide that and have selected their candidate by ballot. How much power is "top of ticket" of either paty allowed to exercise? Strong indication that we need non-partisan politics as the slope is getting very slippery, sliding from two parrty government to one, when candidates assume the right to pick statewide politicians. This nation is not doing a great job of confronting its realities, IMHO. Please consider the consequences of what we allow when voting as well a what we may gain. Ask yourself if the candidate is going to be adequately of service to the future of America as well as the next 4 years.

Meet Kris Kobach, the man who taught "self-deportation" to Mitt Romney - YouTube
Agreed. If there is any real hope here, it is that Romney will be true blue on immigration enforcement and what we are hearing is chatter from the pro invasion systems and RINOs around Romney trying to define him and control him.
