LOS ANGELES—Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca has questioned the civil rights of illegal immigrants in radio remarks that have riled immigrant advocates.

Baca said in an interview on KCRW radio Thursday that illegal immigrants basically are not subject to the kinds of civil rights protections Americans are in his defense of a federal program that checks the immigration status of arrestees.

He says federal policy should decide whether someone should be deported if they haven't been convicted of a crime.

Baca's comments come as some lawmakers and law enforcement officials say the Immigration and Customs Enforcement program called Secure Communities threatens to erode immigrants' trust in police.

Baca says his office has not received such complaints.

Local immigrant advocates have criticized the remarks and defended illegal immigrants' civil rights.

Civil Rights are reserved for citizens and those who came here legally. While Illegals are deserved of Human Rights (which Illegal advocates mistake for civil rights) they are not lawfully within the boundaries of this sovereign nation.. All civl rights (right to work, education, all benefits and opportunities afforced citizens and invited guests etc) are suspended but human rights still respected dyring the entire deportation/removal process...

I don't understand why these people think its ok for these illegals to come here illegally and think its alright for them to remain here illegally. we could not in any way get away with this in Mexico so why should they be allowed to get away with it here. we sure do have some dumb@zz's in our nations government. to them in our nation's capitol, 9/11 never happened

I'm beginning to think that advocating illegal immigration should be a crime. What kind of person let alone an American wants to "advocate" for immigration? Do we not already have more people than jobs? Are we not already $15 trillion in debt feeding them? Are we not already laying off school teachers and public service workers because our coffers are broke from extending benefits and services to people who aren't even supposed to be here? Have we not already bankrupted 45 out of 50 states because of unsustainable population growth spawned by immigration? Do we not already have 26 million unemployed and underemployed adults in the US with families who have no money because the adults in the household either don't have a job or have one but the wages are so deflated because of immigration they can't support themselves let alone their families?

Advocating illegal immigration is advocating poverty, unemployment, underemployment, welfare, despair, hopelessness, dependency, more taxes than we can pay and higher debts than we can ever repay. Why in a country when getting caught 3 times in possession of marijuana can land you a life sentence under mandatory sentencing guidelines is advocating illegal immigration even legal?

Advocating illegal immigration is advocating the end of the American Dream.

Why is such political heresy even legal?

Maybe things are getting clearer for the loonies in Los Angeles county

That's what makes pandering to illegals so disgusting. Our own people continue to suffer, polls of likely voters show that majorities of all Americans want our immigration laws enforced, but only a few politicos - Lamar Smith, for example - are actively working to protect Americans.

I just figured out what the problem is in this Country. Either people do not understand the laws or they are not taking time to read and understand details of our Country laws. How do illegal aliens earned civil rights when they are actually criminals residing undocumented in the U.S.?

If a convicted felon breaks out of jail and remains at large, will we tell the police officers not to search for the convict, because the crime he committed is minor...trespassing, use of fraud documents, employing jobs unlawfully, operating automobiles uninsured, and without a driver's license...This is not enough criminal activities for police officers to locate the criminal? Think about the comparison folks!!
