Gov. Hutchinson moves Arkansas National Guard on New Mexico border to Texas border

LITTLE ROCK, AR (KAIT) - Gov. Asa Hutchinson is moving Arkansas National Guard personnel from New Mexico to Texas to assist with border security.

In a news release, Hutchinson said he directed the state’s Adjutant General, Mark Berry, to move the personnel.

Hutchinson said he deployed the state’s national guard to the southwestern United States-Mexican border to help in a multi-state effort to secure the border.

“At this time, I have directed General Berry to shift those assets to Texas, where they have additional security needs and are requesting our assistance,” Hutchinson said.

As many as eight Arkansas National Guard personnel and two helicopters have been at the border with Mexico since March 2018 at the request of President Donald Trump.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham ordered the New Mexico National Guard to withdraw from the border earlier this week. She also ordered national guards in other states to return home immediately.

“New Mexico will not take part in the President’s charade of border fear-mongering by misusing our diligent National Guard troops,” Grisham said in a press release.
