Governor Bill Richardson Orders National Guard to Patrol the Mexican Border

SANTA FE - Governor Bill Richardson, after meeting with top law enforcement officials this morning, ordered the National Guard to patrol the border with Mexico and ensure the safety of New Mexico citizens.

"I want residents in Southern New Mexico to know we are taking this border violence very seriously by adding a National Guard presence along with state, local and federal law enforcement patrols along the border," Governor Richardson said.

Governor Richardson ordered New Mexico National Guard Major General Kenny Montoya to send guardsmen to the border area. The guardsmen will work with the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Management, which his coordinating the law enforcement presence along the border.

Governor Richardson is also urging the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense to increase the federal law enforcement presence at the border and make that presence permanent.

On Tuesday, the Governor announced an increase in patrols by the New Mexico State Police and local sheriff's departments at the border while police in Arizona investigate the shooting death of an Arizona rancher near the Mexico-Arizona border.

New Mexico Homeland Security and Emergency Management Secretary John Wheeler is coordinating the state's law enforcement response to the shooting, including intelligence gathering and sharing with all law enforcement.

Governor Richardson in 2005 declared a State of Emergency along the New Mexico-Mexico border as a result of border-related violence. As a result of that emergency declaration, border communities were able to pay for additional law enforcement. The emergency also led to the creation of a field office for the state Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management in Las Cruces.

Candelaria told the Republic that he was not aware of any U.S. citizen being murdered by an illegal immigrant in that sector for more than a decade.
He's either not paying attention or lying.

The murder, if it is proven to be by an illegal immigrant, would be a rarity, Omar Candelaria, a Border Patrol spokesman, told the Republic. Candelaria told the Republic that he was not aware of any U.S. citizen being murdered by an illegal immigrant in that sector for more than a decade.
Times are different now, OMAR! Have you not heard of how much more brazen the cartels are getting with hangings from bridges, beheadings, acid baths, etc....? You are clueless.

Why did they wait until a nice man's senseless death to scramble around and do something about this? These ranchers have been begging for some assistence and it has fallen on deaf ears. I'm tired of too little too late!

NM governor orders National Guard to border

    Associated Press - March 31, 2010 4:44 PM ET

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The New Mexico National Guard is planning how to put more troops along the state's border with Mexico to beef up surveillance after Gov. Bill Richardson on Wednesday ordered guardsmen to patrol the border.

The order came days after an Arizona rancher was shot to death. Authorities believe he was killed by an illegal immigrant who fled to Mexico.

Details are still being worked out for how many troops will be sent to the border and where they will be based.

A spokesman for the Guard, Lt. Col. Jamison Herrera, says the timeframe and scope of the work will determine how many soldiers will be activated.

Herrera says the Guard's focus will be observation posts and using infrared tools that can detect body heat and movement during nighttime hours.
