It's good that they are sending the National Guard.
But they might as well sent the Boy Scouts
because the National Guard will not have the power of arrest.
Some National Guard troops already participate in counter-drug operations on the border, though they don't have arrest powers . . .

They can not detain anyone who wants to walk away from them.
They will have weapons but they can't fire at anyone who runs away from them.
They will be able to help people cross the street safely.

The whole thing is to get TV time for Perry
because he want's to run for president.

Yes, JohnDoe2, what you have stated is true, that cannot be disputed. I see it as a symbol sent to Washington that Americans are fed up with what is/has been the American way since Nov.1986. I also hope that that symbol displays that we are ready for the military to take charge of our border until the world has received our message, "The back door has been slammed shut to all alien invaders. Henceforth you will be received not as a welcome guest, but as the enemy invasion!"

Border Expert: National Guard Provides False Sense of Security

BROWNSVILLE - A University of Texas at Brownsville border security expert says deploying National Guard troops to the region may not have the impact many are expecting.

Gov. Rick Perry on Monday ordered the deployment of 1,000 National Guard troops to the border.

Guadalupe Correa Cabrera said the National Guard may bring a false sense of security to many residents.

"The National Guard doesn't do much to solve a problem on the ground. They are not qualified to do many things, especially in regards to immigration," the UTB border security expert said.

President Obama deployed 1,200 National Guard troops to the border in 2010. The troops worked in intelligence-gathering and administrative duties.

"It's a perception of security. Institutionally speaking, the functions that they can accomplish are very minimal," Correa Cabrera said.

Only Border Patrol agents can make direct contact with people crossing illegally.

The National Guard will assist the Border Patrol in ways similar to what Texas Department of Public Safety troopers are doing now.

RGV reacts to National Guard surge

MCALLEN—Residents of the Rio GrandeValley will start to see Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s “boots on the ground” in the form of 1,000 Texas National Guard over the next few weeks.

But some call the governor’s actions ‘gratuitous’ at the expense of the Texas taxpayer.

“It’s a waste of money and a waste of time,” said Gary Mounce who holds a Ph.D. in political science and is an associate professor at the University of Texas Pan American. “It’s using cannon to swat a fly.”

Mounce said housing the swath of military personnel will put an even bigger strain on housing options as the immigrant surge overloads existing facilities and said the move is likely a political ploy.
“It will only heighten the appearance of militarization in the Valley — a lot of people already see us as a warzone, but our local leaders know that’s not true,” he added.

State Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, who says he opposes the National Guard deployment, agreed the emphasis should be on bolstering local efforts.

“We need more resources to hire more police officers, law enforcement, DPS troopers and Border Patrol. This is a civil matter, not a military matter.”

Meanwhile, Texas Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott lauded Perry’s decision and said that the attorney general’s office will be closely monitoring the legal aspects of the National Guard deployment and supports the move.

But State Sen. Wendy Davis, the Democratic nominee for governor, who called for an emergency legislative session before the military decision was announced, said the answer is not the National Guard but more deputy sheriffs on the U.S.-Mexico border alongside the Texas Department of Public Safety, which is already deployed.

The Texas branch of the American Civil Liberties Union condemned the order. “Increasing, yet again, the number of law enforcement personnel patrolling our border communities will only escalate the potential for interactions that violate border residents’ constitutional rights and degrade the quality of life for everyone at the border,” said Adriana Piñon, senior staff attorney for the ACLU of Texas.

Likewise, the Texas Democrats, said the decision to use more military force ignores local efforts and was a political stunt.

“While those in the Valley are working hard to care for thousands of children in need and demanding we fix our broken immigration system, Governor Perry is continuing his routine of photo-op politics to further his Presidential aspirations,” said Texas Democratic Party Communications Director, Emmanuel Garcia in an email statement.

As for what the National Guard situation will look like as it unfurls in the Valley, the logistical details remain unclear.

“I think that the local people will not have to worry about military walking through their streets with rifles, just increased security at the border,” said Robert Sievert, senior lecturer and director of the Certificate in Advanced International Affairs Program at the Bush School of Government and Public Service, at TexasA&MUniversity. But Sievert said the surge will be noticeable. “I think 1,000 troops is a significant number, it will definitely multiply the capabilities of the officials who are now at the border,” he added.

Like I've been saying. Won't do a damn thing unless the NG can arrest, kick back, and even shoot those who try and escape... maybe those beanbag shells that are non lethal would be good. But whats to stop illegals if there is no serious risk at stake. Same thing with any criminal, why obey the law when the punishment is a slap on the hand.

I think the plan is to have the national guard throw water balloons at the illegal aliens and yell at them in hopes that they will go home on their own.
