Since they want to use the excuse that they need to not ask about thier immigration status in order to solve crimes how about this idea.
Tuscon Arizona has turned that corner too. And changed their policy to be like L.A.
Since this is their excuse, How about this.
If this is how they want to do it Go ahead ask for immigration status and if someone is a witness to a ongoing criminal investigation and they want them protected.Let them do it with a list, to be left at the dispatchers office so when they call something in and they are stopped for any reason. They must let them go. They can be free to blend back in with the population. However,Once the case is over their status as protected should be forfeited. If they are asked for information they get put on a list at the courthouse and the dispatchers desk to keep them from being deported. If they can do hot sheets on stolen cars they can do this. However if the case is over and they are no longer needed to solve the crime or be a witness and the police come face to face with them over an infraction of the law later. Their status should go back to deportable. They also must come forward immediately if a crime has been committed when they have information . If they do not they cannot claim the right to be on the witness list.
How's that for compromise. Protects them to be able to come forward and does not let them off the hook totally so you won't be a sanctuary city.
