Green Bay Illegal-Immigrant Ordinance Takes Effect

June 22, 2007 02:22 PM EDT

Effective Friday, the City of Green Bay can take away licenses, contracts, and grants from businesses that hire illegal immigrants.

The ordinance took effect once the official notice was published in the newspaper.

The ordinance allows city council members to question business owners about their employees and hiring practices, in addition to taking away city-approved licenses.

Two restaurants, Carnitas and Mackinaw's, have already been asked to appear in front of the city's Protection & Welfare Committee.

The Brown County board is considering a similar ordinance for the county.
