WASHINGTON – A conservative group opposing amnesty for people who entered the country illegally has revoked endorsements of three Texas Republicans, Reps. Sam Johnson of Plano, John Carter of Round Rock and Ted Poe of Humble.

Americans for Legal Immigration Political Action Committee targeted Johnson and Carter because of their roles on a bipartisan House group seeking a deal on immigration, said ALIPAC president William Gheen. Both say they oppose “amnesty.” But immigration hardliners are concerned that the House group may propose a deal that includes a path to citizenship for 11 million people in the country illegally.

Poe was targeted partially for a Politico op-ed where he recommends a path to legal status, but not citizenship.

ALIPAC revoked endorsements Tuesday for 10 GOP lawmakers it labelled “turncoats,” and pledged to find challengers for the 2014 elections. Poe’s endorsement was dropped several weeks ago.

“These candidates were endorsed because ALIPAC believed they would support existing immigration and border laws instead of any form of amnesty or legalization for illegal aliens,” the group said in announcing its move. “ALIPAC’s support was based on these candidates signing pledges to oppose amnesty and their strong grades with the organization NumbersUSA.”

Carter and Johnson have an A+ with NumbersUSA. Carter’s 98 percent grade is the highest of any federal lawmaker from Texas.

The only other Republican in the bipartisan House “group of 7,” Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida, was not mentioned today by ALIPAC, but did not have the group’s endorsement.

Gheen said he is confident the targeted lawmakers won’t be able to survive primary fights, though he did not offer names of potential opponents.

“Each one of them is highly vulnerable to a grassroots challenge,” he said.

In their 2012 primaries, Johnson received 83 percent of the vote, Carter had 76 percent, and Poe ran unopposed.
