She was detained "based on a removal order issued by the Department of Justice's Executive Office for Immigration Review which became final in May 2013," immigration officials said, according to CNN.Rayos left Mexico 21 years ago, according to The New York Times.

Since 2008, she has been checking in at the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement office since she was caught during a raid at her workplace using a fake Social Security number.

"Lupita has been doing yearly check-ins with ICE and nothing happened," said Lucy Sandoval, an activist who has been working with Rayos' family. "But this is a different time."
People were protesting against her deportation as a van carrying Rayos left the ICE building, according to The New York Times. People were chanting "Liberation, not deportation."

Her attorney told CNN affiliate KNXV-TV that she could be the first Arizonan deported under President Trump's new executive order which targets undocumented immigrants with a history of arrests.

“We’re living in a new era now, an era of war on immigrants,” Rayos’s lawyer, Ray A. Ybarra Maldonado, said Wednesday.
