Thread: Haitians returned home after being abandoned in Nicaragua

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti (CMC) — Nicaragua has returned 11 Haitians, including five children, who were abandoned on a road near the seaside resort of La Boquita on Sunday after they attempted to enter the country illegally as part of their travel plans to reach the United States.

The authorities said that the smuggler, who is popularly known in Haiti as a “Coyote” had promised to lead the Haitians to the border with Honduras, but abandoned them before they were rescued by the police.

The police said that the “Coyote” has not been arrested or identified and they did not provide any further details on the Haitians who are among several nationals of the French-speaking Caribbean country that leave their country in search for a better living overseas, illegally.

Last year, Nicaragua, which serves as a transit corridor for migrants attempting to reach the US border, detained several groups of illegal migrants from Africa and Haiti who had been abandoned and stripped of their possessions by unscrupulous smugglers.
