A Harlingen man is behind bars after being accused of molesting a 13-year-old girl.

Harlingen police arrested 21-year-old Alvaro Ramirez Avalos on an indecency with a child by contact charge over the weekend.

Investigators told Action 4 News that the 13-year-old made an outcry back in February prompting an investigation.

The girl told police that Avalos had inappropriate sexual contact with her several times.

An investigation ended with a warrant being issued for Avalos' arrest.

A police officer pulled Avalos over for a traffic violation off Wilson and Chester Park Roads on Friday and arrested him for the warrant.

Action 4 News does not identify victims of sexual abuse but police said Avalos knew the girl through her older, adult sister.

Avalos appeared before a Harlingen municipal judge on Saturday morning where he was issued a $50,000 dollar bond.

The Harlingen man remains in custody at the Cameron County Jail where Border Patrol officials have filed a detainer against him.
