City police arrest man after traffic stop

Hazleton police arrested a 29-year-old man who told them he has been in the United States illegally for six years after a traffic stop on North Wyoming Street on Wednesday, according to court papers.

Luis Ruperto Moreno of East Green Street was charged with unsworn falsification to authorities and false identification to law enforcement and committed to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in Wilkes-Barre in lieu of $25,000 straight bail.

According to the affidavit:

Moreno identified himself as David Cotto and didn’t have a valid license. He said he bought the non-official picture identification card at a local store, which listed the name as David Cotto Berrios. The officer cited him for not having a license, but then arrested him when he signed his name David Cotto.

At City Hall, he gave police his real name and told them that he purchased a Social Security number from a friend so he could work.
