Lawmakers have scheduled a hearing for a proposal one Indiana state senator says will lead to an Arizona-style crackdown on illegal immigration in Indiana.

The hearing is scheduled for Feb. 2nd at the Statehouse.

Republican Sen. Mike Delph of Carmel says he expects a "full crowd" at the meeting where his bill will be discussed.

Delph's proposal will require police to ask for proof of citizenship or immigration status if they had a reasonable suspicion that a person is illegally in the country.

The bill would also require that official state documents are issued only in English in most cases.

The bill also includes a proposal that Delph has pushed before, punishment for employers who hire illegal immigrants. Companies could lose their business license after a third offense.
