No, We Can't:Obama Speech Provides Little Hope, Immig. Break

No, we can't: Obama speech provides little hope for immigration breakthrough

President Barack Obama's immigration address at American University last week had been promoted as an effort to get the ball rolling on long-stalled comprehensive reform legislation. Instead, it came off as a contradictory mix of high-blown rhetoric with a hefty dose of political pessimism.

Obama began with a review of the key role immigration has played in the development of the United States, including fueling a youthful work force essential to economic expansion. He described how various waves of newcomers, from Poles and Irish to Chinese and Hispanics, have fueled nativist resentments over the decades.

According to the president, the latest controversy has been exacerbated by the failure of the national government to secure our borders, and the resulting influx of an estimated 11 million people who are here illegally.

Most of them are men and women "simply seeking a better life for themselves and their children," said the president. "They work hard, they save, they stay out of trouble." On the other hand, their presence "makes a mockery" of all those attempting to follow the time-consuming and expensive path of immigrating legally.

Blanket amnesty isn't a desirable solution, argued Obama, but neither is forced deportation, because it would be logistically impossible and wildly expensive. Yet, the newcomers must "get right with the law" by paying their taxes, paying a fine, and learning English before they can be eligible for citizenship.

Where solid bipartisan support for such an approach existed only a few years ago, including both President George W. Bush and Arizona Senator and former presidential candidate John McCain, in the polarized debate of today GOP support has melted away. What the president didn't note is that moderates in his own party facing midterm elections are showing little zeal for walking into the immigration policy furnace.

Until all the broken parts of our immigration system are fixed — most advantageously in a coordinated package - the situation will only deteriorate further as states seek their own remedies. Unfortunately, the president's words give little hope that Washington will produce change anytime soon.

    No More Rewards

No more rewards for invading our country...No more Amnesties

In order to STOP Illegal Immigration You MUST STOP GIVING AMNESTY...If you give an Amnesty it only GUARANTEES a push for the next one....Thats all amnesty does. It just sets up the next amnesty attempt...

You MUST say "NO" and do whatever it takes to remove any and all incentives...

WE SIMPLY NEED WHAT ALL OTHER COUNTRIES HAVE, AND THAT IS FEDERAL PRISON TIME FOR BEING IN THIS COUNTRY "ILLEGALLY".

FIRST TIME = 3 MANDATORY YEARS, THEN SELF DEPORTATION OR FACE THE SECOND TERM, WHICH IS 7 YEARS IN PRISON, THEN SELF DEPORTATION OR WE EVEN HAVE A THIRD TERM= 10 YEARS, THEN SELF DEPORT OR WE AGAIN OFFER ANOTHER 10 YEARS IN OUR PRISONS, THEN DEPORTATION....

I'M VERY SURE THAT THEY WILL CRAWL OVER THE WALLS OR FENCE, ONLY THIS TIME IT WILL BE IN A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION.

WITH OUR DEBT, AFTER THEY ARE GONE, THERE WILL BE JOBS, HOUSE PAYMENTS MET, AND 5 BILLION DOLLARS SAVED AFTER THEIR DEPARTURE

THEY JUST REFUSE TO DISTINGUISH THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO, LEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. YOU WOULD THINK OBAMA WOULD KNOW THE DIFFERENCE, SEEING THAT HE IS SO SMART WHEN IT COMES TO BOOK SENSE. BUT, HE IS LACKING IN THE COMMON SENSE DEPT OK OBAMA, NOW LISTEN UP, IF THEY CAME HERE BY THE RULES, THEY ARE LEGAL IMMIGRANTS. AND IF THEY CAME HERE VIA JUST CROSSING THE BORDER, THEY ARE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS PLAIN AND SIMPLE THERE ARE LEGAL AND ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN THIS COUNTRY, AND THE ONES YOU ARE GOING TO BAT FOR ARE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

I AGREE WITH YOU 110%. THIS HAS TO STOP AND IT HAS TO STOP NOW. ILLEGALS ARE A HUGE PART OF THE U.S. ECONOMY BEING IN THE TOILET, AND THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOTHING TO STOP THEM FROM WANTING TO COME HERE. IN FACT, THEY ARE JUST GIVING THEM AN OPEN INVITATION TO COME ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE HISPANIC. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY HISPANICS ARE THE CHOSEN ONES. THERE ARE OTHER COUNTRIES IN WORSE SHAPE THAN MEXICO, AND YET MEXICANS ARE NOT ROUNDED UP IN MASS NUMBERS AND DEPORTED. ie HAITIANS I'M SURE THERE ARE MORE FROM OTHER COUNTRIES BUT HAITIANS JUST COME TO MIND RIGHT NOW. THERE IS NOTHING THIS COUNTRY CAN'T DO, AND WHEN IT COMES TO RIDDING THE COUNTRY OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, THEY JUST DON'T WANT TO GET RID OF THEM.
