SASABE, Ariz. -- A holiday hunting trip didn't yield any animals for a group of Valley men, but it did turn up hundreds of pounds of illegal drugs.

Pierre Mondotte was hunting white-tailed deer in Sasabe, which is located on the Mexican border, with a friend and his son.

"I've been trying to get a December tag for probably 20 years, they're not easy to draw," he said. "We found a lot of little deer but we didn't find the big one that we wanted to shoot."

On Thursday, Mondotte says he ran to the top of a mountain to hunt, and looked down to find bundles of marijuana.

"It was kind of thrown underneath a tree it looked like, a mesquite tree, and hard to see if you weren't at the right angle you wouldn't see it," he said.

Mondotte initially thought it was a person, but soon realized it was about 200 pounds of marijuana.

No word on how long the drugs had been left there or why.

The group contacted National Guardsmen who were stationed nearby.

Border Patrol representatives could not confirm the incident but did say Sasabe is in the busiest drug smuggling corridor in the nation.

Still, it's unusual for hunters and hikers to stumble upon illegal drugs left behind.

"The Border Patrol understands and appreciates community members’ willingness to help as they can be valuable sources of information. It is important to stress that the Border Patrol discourages anyone from approaching or interfering with suspected smugglers, illegal aliens, and/or contraband as this behavior can have disastrous personal and public safety consequences. The best way to handle any encounter with suspected illegally activity is to immediately report it to the proper authorities."

"Anybody can find a deer, not everybody finds that.

Citizens can report suspicious activity to the U.S. Border Patrol by calling 1-877-872-7435 and remain anonymous if they choose.

Mondotte calls National Guardsmen and Border Patrol officers heroes, and adds it's a trip he'll never forget.
