HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - Authorities in Garland County have charged a man with impersonating a law enforcement officer for allegedly pulling over motorists and writing fake tickets.

The Sentinel-Record reports that 20-year-old Wilmar Arnulfo Perez was arrested at his home Wednesday morning.

A judge set a $10,000 bond for Perez, but federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement put a hold on him because he is an alleged illegal immigrant. Perez has a hearing in Hot Springs District Court on Nov. 1. It's unclear if he has a lawyer.

Sheriff's investigator Bill House says Perez was a sheriff's cadet in 2009 but was expelled from the program. House says Perez had a ticket book, badges and handcuffs that were from the department.

Perez also faces misdemeanor counts of theft and possession of a blue light.

Something strikes me as way off about this entire story. How does an illegal get into the cadet program to begin with? WHY was he given the boot?

If they booted him 'cause he was illegal why was he still here? Obviously his mental stability was waaaaaay off...

(AP) - An alleged illegal alien charged with posing as a Garland County sheriff's deputy had undergone a background check when he applied to be a cadet at the department at age 14 in 2005.

The Sentinel-Record reports that Wilmar Arnulfo Perez of Hot Springs is to have a hearing on Nov. 1 to
answer a felony charge of criminal impersonation of a law enforcement officer and misdemeanor counts.

The sheriff's department says that when Perez underwent the 2005 background check, he was found to have a valid Arkansas ID and no other record was indicated.

After his Wednesday arrest, federal immigration officials put a hold on Perez because he was allegedly in the U.S. illegally.
