House passes official English measure IN OKLAHOMA

    http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article. ... ommentform

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The House approved a measure Wednesday declaring English as the state's official language. The proposed constitutional change, which now goes to the Senate, would be referred to a vote of the people this fall.

Senate Bill 163 was approved, 70-28, after more than 1 1/2 hours of discussion.

The biggest impact of the measure would be that driverµs license examinations could no longer be provided in Spanish. The Legislature had passed a law several years ago allowing the tests in Spanish.

Rep. Randy Terrill, R-Moore, who sponsored the bill, said earlier, "Being able to read and write in English is critical, particularly when we are talking about driving."

Opponents say eliminating driver's testing from being provided in Spanish is a public safety issue because some people who cannot read English will be driving anyway.

The bill was strongly opposed by some American Indian tribes, although the bill would not prohibit the tribes from using their language.

We better make sure the feds, after the next election do not pass any amnesty.

This statement makes no sense. Eliminating driver's testing in Spanish is what will make driving safer for other people on the road. If they cannot read enough English to pass the drivers test, how do they expect them to read road signs. What about the overhead signs on freeways...such as Bridge closed, bridge icy when wet and so forth? If they can not read these signs they are a danger to themselves and everyone else on the road.
Good for OKLAHOMA CITY. At least they have some common sense about such important test's being in English.
I certainly hope the bill passes. Just maybe some other cities and states will get the idea.
It is also a waste to print ballots in other languages other than English. If people are voting they are (supposed to be) citizens of this country and know English.

Then I guess they won't be surprised if they're caught driving without a license and deported now will they? If you cannot read the posted signs, you have NO reason to be driving in this country!

I was just thinking the same thing. LOL

You go OKLAHOMA. Hey they have Senator Jim Inhofe too. Got to keep him in the Senate. The opposition is coming after him hard this year. Harry Reid wants that magic number of 60 to pass anything he wants.
