A string of border busts over a five-day span have stopped millions of dollars worth of illegal drugs from entering Texas from Mexico.

The first two big seizures came in back-to-back busts Jan. 13 at the World Trade Bridge connecting Laredo, Texas with Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.

There, Customs and Border Protection officers discovered 2,211 pounds of marijuana hidden inside a commercial scrap metal shipment just hours before finding another 1,496 pounds hidden inside a tractor trailer.

Combined, the two marijuana seizures weighed nearly two tons, and kept an estimated $741,363 worth of marijuana off the streets.

Three days later, CBP agents working the Progreso Port of Entry stopped a Jeep containing 138.49 pounds of methamphetamine valued at $2.76 million.

Then the following day at the same entry point, agents stopped another man driving a Honda, inside of which was hidden 75 pounds of heroin ($1.7 million street value) and 15 pounds of cocaine ($114,920 street value).

"The narcotic interdiction can be attributed to CBP's commitment to protect our nation's borders," said Port Director Nestor Garza III, Progreso/Donna Port of Entry, in a media release.
"Our officers' dedication and work ethic is second to none."
