How many illegal immigrants are there in the United States?

    LA PLAZA
We are lucky enough to receive many comments here on La Plaza each day, a lot of which are in response to items we post about the issue of illegal immigration.

Occasionally, commenters will post conflicting statements about the number of illegal immigrants living in the United States. In this post, we wanted to take a look at what the actual numbers are.

Due to the fact that illegal immigrants are, by definition, largely undocumented, exact figures are very difficult to obtain. The most up-to-date estimates -– which you can see here -– were calculated using figures from the Department of Homeland Security and the American Community Survey of the U.S Census Bureau.

According to those estimates, there were 11.6 million unauthorized immigrants living in the United States in January 2006.

The vast majority of those unauthorized immigrants were from Mexico: 57%. An additional 4% were from Guatemala and El Salvador. People from Honduras accounted for 2% per cent of that total.

People from the Philippines, India, Korea, China and Vietnam accounted for the remaining significant groups of unauthorized immigrants.

These figures undoubtedly have changed somewhat over the past year and a half, and we’d be happy to hear from any individuals or agencies that have different estimates.

In terms of the Latino population as a whole living in the United States, it now accounts for more than 15% of the population, according to the Department of Homeland Security in May.

In July 2007, there were 45.5 million Latinos living in the United States, making them the largest minority group in the country.

There is a group called CAPS that has a theory that the figure is 38 Million but it is not regarded favorably by any major group NumbersUSA, FAIR or CIS.

A more realistic figure is 20 Million including quasi legal immigrants who have residence rights but not work rights but who are working. There are also dependent children of illegal aliens who are citizens by a precedent under the Supreme Courts Wong Kim Ark not the Constitution.

There has to be way more than 20 million. There are over 300 million people in this country,no way 20 million make the kind of impact that the illegals have made. They have invaded every major and medium size city in this country. It would not surprise me if it were closer to 70 to 80 million.

I also believe their are way more than they are admitting to...

I also think that border fence in the picture is what should cover the Southern border between U.S. and Mexico. if it can keep people in Jail it can keep illegals out of the United States.....Let them get stuck in Mexico and see how they like people invading their country from all over the world.

Go ahead and conflate geing a atino or being an immigrant with being an illegal alen. You are wasting your time in xenophobia when I would rather be dealing with the problems America has of illegal immigation, quasi legals and anchor babies.

IMO there are around 20 million. But that doesnt include ANCHOR babies, which is probably another 30 million.

I THINK THE THE TOTAL IS MORE LIKE 50 MILLION!

    In the last 20 years:
There have been an estimated 4 million anchor babies born.
From '87 to ''97 an average of 1 million illegals a year came
From '98 to '2008 an average of 2 million illegals a year came.

There are between 30 and 40 million illegal immigrants in our United States.
