Human smuggler driving stolen truck hits school bus

PHOENIX -- The suspect involved in a hit-and-run with a school bus Thursday afternoon is a well-known human smuggler, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Jonathan Carillo-Rubio, 20, was driving a stolen pickup truck westbound on Interstate 10 at the stack when he collided with a school bus shortly after 3 p.m.

DPS said there were 28 elementary-school children onboard the bus.

After the collision, Carillo-Rubio tried to drive away, but the vehicle became disabled at the 35th Avenue off-ramp due to damage from the crash.

A DPS motorcycle officer drove up to the disabled vehicle and Carillo-Rubio fled on foot. He was apprehended a short time later with the assistance of Phoenix police.

According to DPS, Carillo-Rubio claimed to be a juvenile and gave a false date of birth.

Authorities discovered Carillo-Rubio was an illegal immigrant and had illegally entered the United States a number of times, most often working as a human smuggler or foot guide. Tucson Border Patrol officials had reportedly been looking for him.

Carillo-Rubio is facing charges of felony hit and run, three counts of aggravated assault and 27 counts of endangerment.

Two children on the school bus were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

PHOENIX - The Department of Public Safety has identified the driver involved in a crash with a school bus in west Phoenix.

20-year-old Jonathan Carillo-Rubio was driving a stolen pick-up truck and was westbound on Interstate 10 at the stack interchange when he collided with a school bus with 28 elementary-school-age children Thursday afternoon, according to DPS.

After the collision, Carillo-Rubio allegedly tried to drive away but the vehicle became disabled at the 35th Avenue off-ramp.

DPS and Phoenix police eventually arrested Carillo-Rubio.

State police say Carillo-Rubio is an illegal immigrant and has entered the U.S. a number of times working as a human smuggler.

DPS says Carillo-Rubio is facing charges of felony hit and run, three counts of aggravated assault and 27 counts of endangerment.

Two children aboard the bus were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
