A convicted sex offender driving a Hummer carrying several illegal entrants was arrested Sunday northeast of Douglas by Border Patrol agents.
An off-duty agent noticed people loading into a red hummer at 1 p.m. Sunday, said Sean King, Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman. He called in the license plate and based on the information, agents stopped the vehicle at mile marker 376 on Arizona 80, which is about 12 miles northeast of Douglas.
The driver, Gerardo Andrado, 38, of Phoenix, was arrested on suspicion of alien smuggling, King said.
Andrado had five illegal entrants in the Hummer. Four of the men admitted they were Mexican citizens while the fifth claimed to be U.S. citizen. A records check later revealed that man was a Peruvian who had failed to show up for an immigration hearing in New Jersey, King said.
The four Mexican illegal entrants were processed for voluntary removal while the Peruvian man was transferred to a Tucson detention center where he awaits a formal deportation proceedings, King said.
Andrado, has been charged with numerous crimes in the past 20 years including sexual contact with a minor, assault, burglary and driving under the influence, will be charged with alien smuggling, King said.
