    IA: DeCoster Immigration Raid

    DeCoster Immigration Raid
    Associated Press

    Sept 13, 2007
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Fifty-one workers were arrested during an immigration raid at six DeCoster egg farms in Wright County. Those farms are where agents have conducted several other raids in recent years.

Tim Counts is spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He says the workers, most of them from Mexico, have been transported to various detention facilities in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and elsewhere. A judge will decide their fate at deportation hearings in Omaha, Nebraska.

Federal agents conducted the two-and-a-half hour raid Wednesday. Counts said some of the workers, including some juveniles and parents, were released and told to appear for their scheduled hearing.

Austin "Jack" DeCoster, founder of DeCoster Farms, has previously been investigated by ICE for using illegal workers. Agents have raided his farms at least four times since 2001.

    Why isn't he in jail?

Any bets as to whether or not they show up for their hearings?

I agree that he should have been prosecuted in the past, but then again, we have to remember that under Bush there has been no enforcement.

I'm sure that DeCoster's luck has run out now and we'll see him in court. He'll be used as an object lesson for other employers....big and small.....and it does seem to work from what I've seen in terms of illegals losing their jobs either because their employers know they are illegals, or because they have not been able to provide proof of legal status.

    Employers are getting the message.

Look for another racial profiling suit. And, the chickens will go on strike which will create a market crisis in the egg sector.

Unless the chickens start doing the jobs DeCoster's illegals are no longer able to do.

ICE Says DeCoster Did Nothing Wrong in Hiring Illegal Immigrants by Erin Therese
    KIMT News 3

    Sept 14, 2007
Immigration officials say DeCoster farms has done nothing wrong following a raid and the arrest of 51 illegal immigrants.

Wednesday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided six DeCoster Egg Farms in Wright County. This is not the first time ICE has found illegal immigrants working for the company. The raid was part of an agreement made in 2004 where ICE can do unannounced raids on the DeCoster property.

The majority of people arrested are from Mexico and all but five were men. Many people in the area said they don't think the raids make any difference because they believe the company will eventually just hire more illegal immigrants. A spokesman from ICE said in this case the company has done nothing wrong.

The illegal immigrants who were arrested will be tried in Omaha next week.
