ICE Chief Plans To Tackle Gang Violence

    Brian Andrews
    Reporting

(CBS4) MIAMI The new head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Miami says dealing with gang violence and weapons traffickers are among his top priorities.

Anthony Mangione was just appointed to the post of Special Agent in Charge. Mangione says gangs in our area are becoming increasingly violent.

Mangione cited the violence that occurred over the Christmas holiday at Boynton Beach Mall when one man was killed and shoppers were forced to run for cover.

The new head of ICE says his agents are also heavily involved in fighting weapons traffickers and so-called "arms" brokers.

"These aren't guys who are just Iranians looking for parts for the Iranian Army or Air Force, these are guys with laundry lists of parts to ship anywhere in the world and they'll buy them from the lowest bidders," said Mangione.

Mangione says the amount of guns and ammo being smuggled out of South Florida to guerilla groups like the FARC in Colombia, and to Venezuela is alarming.

The Miami Field Division of ICE Investigations is the third busiest in the country, behind New York and Los Angeles.

In addition to his duties overseeing the office, Mangione will also serve on the South Florida Joint Terrorism Task Force.
