ICE Director: Suspected Wine Country Arsonist Is Illegal Alien Mexican National

WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director Tom Homan confirmed on Thursday that a man arrested in connection with setting a fire in Sonoma County Wine Country is an illegal alien from Mexico who has been twice returned to his “home country.”

Homan also confirmed that ICE has issued detainer requests for Jesus Fabian Gonzalez five times now in the past year alone, including the one issued on October 16 in relation to his most recent arrest on suspicion of arson. All of the arrests were made “by Sonoma County on various felony and misdemeanor charges,” according to Homan.

Sonoma County is considered a sanctuary jurisdiction and does not fully cooperate with federal immigration officials. That includes not honoring ICE detainer requests. “ICE was never notified of Mr. Gonzalez’ various releases,” Homan wrote in the statement regarding Gonzalez.

There were several fires in the region, and it is not clear what role the fires Gonzales allegedly set played in the overall disaster.

Homan’s public statement highlights the lack of cooperation from Sonoma County officials and the devastating wildfires that have ravaged the region:

Once again, a non-cooperative jurisdiction has left their community vulnerable to dangerous individuals and preventable crimes. ICE lodged a detainer against Jesus Gonzalez with Sonoma County jail officials on October 16, following his arrest on felony charges for maliciously setting fire to a property. This is especially troubling in light of the massive wildfires already devastating the region. Over the past year, ICE has lodged detainers against Mr. Gonzalez after four separate arrests by Sonoma County on various felony and misdemeanor charges. ICE was never notified of Mr. Gonzalez’ various releases. Additionally, Mr. Gonzales has been returned to his home country of Mexico on two separate occasions. The residents of Sonoma County, and the state of California, deserve better than policies that expose them to avoidable dangers. Non-cooperation policies – now enshrined in California state law – ensure only one thing: criminals who would otherwise be deported will be released and left free to reoffend as they please.

California Gov. Jerry Brown recently signed into law a bill that makes California a sanctuary state.

    I knew it.

    GRRRR!!!!

Get these gawd damn people out of our country and keep 'em out. You have no idea the damage, cost, destruction, death and despair that has befallen and afflicted our country because we have failed to secure our borders and enforce US immigration law. The situation is beyond any excuse or explanation. No whine, sob story or pity party on the face of this earth can justify what our government has allowed to happen in the United States because of cartel-controlled illegal immigration.

Class Action Lawsuit against Governor Jerry Brown needs to happen for AIDING AND ABETTING illegal aliens and giving them a CLEAR message that our Laws do not apply to them and they can do what the hell they want, to whoever they want, anytime they want with NO fear of deportation or arrest.

No matter that they just KILLED 40 people and destroyed BILLIONS of dollars of homes and businesses with BILLIONS more in lost revenue and personal expenses to those who lost loved ones and their homes.

Sheriff Refutes Breitbart Report Linking Wine Country Fires To Illegal Immigrant

    October 17, 2017 2:01 PM

SANTA ROSA (CBS13) – A right-wing news agency article claiming that an illegal immigrant was arrested in connection with the deadly wine country fires is being called “false and misleading.”

At a Tuesday afternoon press conference, Sonoma County Sheriff Robert Giordano directly addressed the false claim.

“There is no indication he is related to these fires at all,” Sheriff Giordano said. “Cal Fire is doing an investigation to see how these fires started. We don’t even know if it’s arson.”

Rumor control: a man arrested for starting a small fire in Sonoma Co is NOT connected to the large deadly wildfires in Wine Country #cbs13

    — Tony Lopez (@tlomedia) October 17, 2017

CBS13 first brought the headline – published in Breitbart – to the attention of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department that reads, in part:

The suspect “was arrested Sunday on suspicion of arson in wine country fires that have killed at least 40 residents.”

The headline featured in Breitbart on Oct. 17.

While it’s true that a homeless illegal immigrant was arrested for starting a small fire at a park in Sonoma on Sunday, Sheriff Giordano says the suspect is in no way connected to the larger, deadly wildfires.

The article also states the suspect was placed on hold by ICE because he’s in the country illegally, which is true. But Giordano says that’s standard procedure.

Iranian Man Arrested for Starting Devastating California Wildfires Is Fake News

Reports that a 23-year-old Iranian man was arrested for starting the deadly California wildfires are false.

Rumors that an “illegal Muslim” immigrant caused the devastating disaster stemmed from a self-described satire website.

According to Hoax Alert, the fake claim originated on Freedum Junkshun, a website that publishes fake news and political satire. The article claimed that a man named Muhammad Islam was responsible for starting the wildfires that have killed dozens of people and destroyed thousands of businesses in Northern California. It purported:

Islam was born in Tehran, Iran and came to the United States in 2015 on a student visa, which expired when he dropped out of Dartmouth in November 2016. Fox News reported Thursday:

It is unclear what he has been doing since last November. Islam has no social media presence, no phones in his name, no known addresses, and no known aliases.

“It’s like he’s a ghost,” a source at the California FBI told Fox. “The Obama administration just lost him.”

So far, Islam is being uncooperative with the FBI, refusing to answer questions.

According to law enforcement, he was seen exiting a wooded area along California’s Interstate 42. Investigators found a can of gasoline and a blowtorch discarded near the spot where witnesses and photographs place Islam. Fingerprints on the gas can match Islam’s.

The report, however, is entirely fabricated. There was no source from the FBI or any report from Fox News that claimed anyone had been arrested. The photo used in the article actually shows Omar al-Abed, a Palestinian terrorist who killed three people in August.

He is in no way connected to the wildfires in California.

Additionally, Freedum Junkshun states in their disclaimer that their articles are not meant to be taken seriously:

We believe that there is nothing more precious than the mind of an aging conservative. Here we gather a boatload of bullhonkey, works of pure satirical fiction, to give the fist-shakers of the world a reason to hate. Reality is often in the eye of the beholder. You won’t find any of it here.

Another false story claiming that an immigrant started the wildfires circulated social media this week after officials arrested a 29-year-old homeless man. At a press conference Tuesday, according to BuzzFeed News, Sonoma County Sheriff Rob Giordano said of the fake report, “There’s no indication he’s related to these fires at all…I wanted to kill that speculation right now, so we didn’t have things running too far out of control.”

At least 42 people have been killed in the wildfires and more than 7,000 buildings have been destroyed. The devastating fires have caused more than $1 billion in damages, according to the Washington Post. Cal Fire continues to investigate the cause of the wildfires.

Sonoma Sheriff on arson arrest: ICE reaction inaccurate, misleading

Posted on October 19, 2017 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The Sonoma County sheriff fired back today at ICE, calling that agency’s statement about the Sonoma arrest of an arson suspect “inaccurate and inflammatory.”

The ICE press release referred to the Sheriff’s Office as “a non-cooperative jurisdiction (that) has left their community vulnerable to dangerous individuals and preventable crimes.”

Reacting today, Sheriff Rob Giordano said the ICE accusations are misleading, and “damage the relationship we have with our community.”

The dispute stems from the arrest Sunday of Jesus Fabian Gonzalez for felony arson. The incident and arrest took place in in Maxwell Farms Park, where the Sonoma Valley resident had been seen sleeping, Giordano said.

Gonzalez told deputies he lit the fire to stay warm, Giordano said.

There is no indication that Gonzalez had anything to do with the wildfires, Giordano said. “We don’t know if these fires were arson or caused by another source, he said.

The Sonoma Valley man was booked into Sonoma County jail on $100,000 bail for the arson charge, and a $100,000 misdemeanor drug warrant from Ventura County.

The regional ICE office said that over the past year, ICE has lodged detainers against Gonzalez after four separate arrests by Sonoma County on various felony and misdemeanor charges. ICE was never notified of Mr. Gonzalez’ various releases, it said.

In the recent case, Giordano said, ICE sent a detainer requesting the Sheriff’s Office hold Gonzalez for 48 hours past his scheduled release time. “However, this detainer is not signed by a judge so the Sheriff’s Office cannot legally honor it.”

Multiple Federal court cases have determined these administrative detainers are unconstitutional, he maintains.

“ICE has the ability to obtain a warrant for anyone they are interested in like we do every day in this county,” Giordano said. “If ICE obtains a warrant I can legally hold the person and would be happy to do so.”

Gonzalez was arraigned on October 18 and is awaiting his next court date in the Sonoma County Jail, where he will remain until his arson case is heard. After that, he will face the Ventura County charges.

Gonzalez has been in the Sonoma County jail approximately eight times for minor misdemeanor offenses. Giordano said ICE was notified about his release in several of those arrests “as they took place before our recent policy change.”

“We will continue to notify ICE if it complies with law and our policy,” he said.

ICE said it has lodged detainers against Gonzalez after four separate arrests by Sonoma County on various felony and misdemeanor charges. “ICE was never notified of Mr. Gonzalez’ various releases,” the statement said. “Additionally, Gonzales has been returned to his home country of Mexico on two separate occasions.”

ICE said such policies expose the public to avoidable dangers. “Non-cooperation policies – now enshrined in California state law – ensure only one thing: criminals who would otherwise be deported will be released and left free to re-offend as they please.”

According to Giordano, ICE’s “inaccurate and inflammatory” statement provoked a “senseless public confrontation.”

“ICE attacked the Sheriff’s Office in the midst of the largest natural disaster this county has ever experienced,” he said. (Its) misleading statement stirs fear in some of our community members who are already exhausted and scared.”

Giordano pledged to work with ICE cooperatively and within department policy and the law. “Despite ICE’s misleading statement, we will continue to protect and serve our community members with the strength and compassion they deserve.”
