BISHOPVILLE — Police say they don't know the identities of two men in a car that was stopped for suspected drunk driving, and they're detaining both men while they ask federal law enforcement agencies for answers.

A statement from the Maryland State Police said troopers patrolling at about 1:18 a.m. Saturday morning pulled over a vehicle for speeding. The car was on northbound Route 113 near Shingle Landing Road, police said.

The driver of the car, police said, had no legal driver's license; didn't provide registration or proof of insurance for the car; and gave police a false name, police said. Because officers could smell alcohol, the driver was tested for drunk driving, police said, and was arrested for DUI.

Police said the man, whom police described as Hispanic, wouldn't give police his name, age, or say where he lived or where he worked when questioned by language interpreters. He was held on $3,000 bond, police said.

Another Hispanic man who was a passenger in the car, police said, threw open cans of beer out the window when the car was stopped, and he tried to run across the highway but was stopped after a foot chase. The passenger, police said, gave a fake name and provided a fake photo ID that police said was from North Carolina. When in custody, police said, he offered a second fake name; in the police statement, the MSP said they don't know his true identity.

The passenger was also held on $3,000 bond. On Monday, a police sergeant said both men are being held pending deportation hearings with federal immigration authorities.
