Jail, deportation ordered in R.L. Beach stalking case

A Round Lake Beach man will serve 110 days in jail and be deported to Mexico after pleading guilty to attempted stalking.

Francisco Velasquez, 24, was accused of stalking a 17-year-old girl, according to Assistant State's Attorney Reginald Matthews.

Velasquez and the victim were both dropping children off at school on Oct. 14. The girl, on foot, took a path to Round Lake High School after accompanying a younger to school. Velasquez was in a red vehicle, rolled down the window and beckoned the girl inside. She refused twice and literally ran away from him, Matthews said.

Two days later, the act was repeated. The victim made a report to police, who set up surveillance equipment to catch him in the act, which they did on Oct. 19.

The state's attorney's office discovered that Velasquez was in the United States illegally, Matthews said.

Rather than come to a plea agreement immediately, a judge approved Matthew's motion to order a psychological evaluation for Velasquez on Nov. 24.

When the results revealed nothing unusual or alarming, Matthews said Velasquez agreed to accept a reduced charge of attempted stalking, a Class A misdemeanor.
