Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said the recent arrest of a Franklin Park man is another example of the havoc wrought by illegal aliens who commit crimes.

Sergio Uscanga, 26, is charged with identity theft and forgery for using the financial information of a Lake Villa Township man to work for four years.

Curran said Uscanga, who entered this country from Mexico, purchased the name and Social Security number of the 39-year-old victim.

Uscanga used the information to apply for a job at Banner Service Co. in Carpentersville, Curran said, and was hired Sept. 12, 2005.

This past December, Curran said, the victim received a letter from the Internal Revenue Service saying he owed taxes on the wages he had been paid from the job.

The man called police, and Curran said sheriff's detectives tracked down Uscanga and arrested him Sunday morning.

"This case is another example of the devastation criminals who are in this country illegally can cause," Curran said. "This victim will now have to spend months getting his credit straightened out and dealing with an IRS bill he does not owe."

Curran, who has repeatedly called for harsh punishment and expedited deportation of illegal aliens who commit crimes, said it is estimated up to 50 percent of people in this country illegally have stolen identity information.

Uscanga, who is held on $50,000 bond, faces up to five years in prison if convicted and is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 2.

This is my sheriff! His jail is in the town I live. He has been very good on this issue.

WOW Fedup at least you have a sheriff with some common sense that recognizes there is a problem with ID theft and who is causing the problem ....most won't even admit their is a problem or that these illegals do anything wrong, out side of crossing the border!

Absolutely correct SOS! How refreshing to have a local sheriff not only acknowledge that illegal immigration is a factor in many crimes, but actually attempts to enforce the law!

Unfortunately for our Sheriff, there are those in the county that are upset that he switched from the Democratic party to the Replublican party and will vote against him. Great plan - putting party affilication over voting for someone who is trying his best to keep the county safe.

Can the IAs vote where you live? That could make a big difference. It does here!

You were right Jean. This is the article that was in the local paper today. Gives a bit different information.


Sheriff decries burdens of illegal immigration

Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said illegal immigration is affecting society in a number of ways, and cited three cases at a media roundtable discussion Tuesday involving identity theft and rape.

"This is a reoccurring theme with illegal immigration," he said. "There are devastating consequences to society."

In the first case, a Lake Villa man reported that he had been notified by the Internal Revenue Service in December that he owed $100,000 for wages earned over the past four years at a factory in Carpentersville.

The man had no idea what they were talking about and called the sheriff's office. Investigators determined that Sergio Alejandro Uscanga, 26, of Franklin Park had purchased the man's Social Security number and birth date so he could work.

"He admitted to purchasing the identity," Curran said.

Curran's officers deal with two to three identity theft cases per week.

"We continue to bring these cases to court," he said, adding that he feels for the victim who now has to get his credit record straightened out and resolve problems with the IRS.

The second and third cases he cited involved predatory criminal sexual assault. In both cases, the suspects are believed to have fled back to Mexico. Warrants were issued for Jose Alfredo Santiso, 56, of Mundelein and Miguel Rosales, 22, of Waukegan.

Santiso allegedly abused a boy in Mundelein in 2003 and 2004 when the victim was 9 and 10 years old. Santiso was a friend of the family.

Rosales allegedly assaulted a 10-year-old girl five times in Highwood in 2009.

They show up and try to vote. Some get away with it - some don't. Our local jury list is made from the voter registration list. When called for jury duty, there are always a few that send the notice back with "not a citizen" written on it.

There was a scandal a while ago, when, you guessed it, ACORN submitted obviously falsified voter registration cards. I'd be willing to bet a majority were for illegals.
