WAUKEGAN, Ill. - Ten months after applying to a program aimed at training police to begin deportation proceedings against illegal immigrants convicted of certain crimes, some officials say they've yet to receive any federal assistance.

Mayors of both Waukegan and Carpentersville in Chicago's north suburbs say they're not sure they'll ever be able to implement the so-called 287(g) program because of slow progress on the federal level.

Five Illinois law enforcement agencies have applied to participate in the controversial initiative and are among the group of 92 nationally whose applications are pending. The program's been implemented with 47 agencies in 17 states.

Federal officials say they're pleased with the program and it's proving to be successful.
