Illegal alien crime ring steals $7 million in phony tax refunds

Here comes another massive "narrative violation" the media won't be interested in reporting heavily, since we're supposed to think illegal aliens are all hard-working "dreamers" who wouldn't think of breaking any law except our meaningless citizenship requirements, We're also not supposed to dwell on how Barack Obama's imperial amnesty orders are legitimizing not just border violation, but identity theft. That's why we must turn to a press release from a watchdog group, Judicial Watch, to get the whole story:

In the same week that President Obama issued his administrative amnesty sparing millions from deportation, the feds busted a criminal ring of illegal immigrants that used stolen identities to defraud the U.S. government out of $7.2 million in tax refunds.

The mastermind of this sophisticated operation is a resourceful delinquent in Frankfurt, Delaware who runs a landscaping and cleaning business called “Las Tres Mujeres” (the three women in Spanish). Her name is Linda Avila and she’s admitted in federal court that she filed more than 1,700 fraudulent tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) using stolen identities assigned to migrant workers—mostly from Mexico—living in the U.S. illegally.

Avila altered W-2 forms with white out to cover up the names, social security numbers and addresses then wrote in other names and addresses to create the fraudulent returns, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) announcement. Foreign dependents were often added to increase the refund amounts. The IRS then cut refund checks ranging from $4,000 to more than $7,000, according to the feds. Avila provided the illegal aliens fake identification documents so they could cash the IRS refund checks. The illegal alien migrant workers kept a small fee and gave most of the money to Avila.

I'm sure this was all done as an "act of love." Maybe the mainstream press will consider exploring the story, once they're finished staking out the home of an obscure Republican staffer who said something mean about the Obama daughters' fashion sense. It shouldn't take much longer to finish going through Elizabeth Lauten's kindergarten transcripts to learn if she finger-painted anything that could be construed as offensive.

When federal agents searched Avila’s home in Delaware they seized about 17 boxes of fraudulent tax records, according to the DOJ document outlining the case.

Templates for fraudulent W-2 forms and identification documents were also found on her computer. The records included copies of approximately 1,754 tax returns filed between 2008 and 2014 for tax years 2004 through 2013. The total loss to the IRS based on the fraudulent returns is approximately $7.2 million, federal authorities estimate.

Back in July a federal grand jury in Norfolk Virginia indicted Avila on charges of conspiracy to make false claims, mail fraud and false claims against the United States. On November 17, the same week Obama issued a long-anticipated administrative amnesty, Avila finally pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy and mail fraud. She faces three decades in prison and remains free pending sentencing on February 17. The feds have not disclosed if her illegal immigrant partners in crime will be charged.

What we do know for sure is that a few days after Avila pleaded guilty for operating this scheme involving illegal aliens swindling the U.S. government—and American taxpayers—our commander-in-chief announced with great fanfare that he was sparing 5 million illegal immigrants from deportation. Their presence in the U.S. alone constitutes a violation of our laws, yet the president rewarded them with amnesty. Obama actually acknowledged this during his recent speech in Las Vegas where he celebrated the new order with his allies in the powerful open borders movement. “The truth is, undocumented workers broke our immigration laws,” Obama said. “They didn’t follow the rules in terms of how they were supposed to come.”

That's one of the things I find so offensive, and occasionally puzzling, about the Left's enthusiasm for illegal aliens. Sure, the crass political calculation involved is as obvious as hell, so obvious that it's considered unforgivably rude to mention it: the Left likes illegal aliens because they're presumably in favor of Big Government and the welfare state, so they'll good Democrat foot soldiers at the polls.
But there must still be a few honest liberals who sincerely believe in the principles of Big Government control, command economics, and a managed society. How in the world can any such honest liberal tolerate illegal immigration? It's a perfect example of systemic corruption. One would expect the honest advocates of an enormously powerful and complicated government system to be strongly opposed to its corruption. The honest statist should be horrified at the notion of people barging into his beloved finely-engineered high-performance mega-State, consuming both fiscal and social benefits without permission, contribution, or documentation. How can anyone sincerely support the micro-management and constant surveillance of everyone except a group numbering in the millions that refuses to comply with such requirements? How can anyone with an ounce of moral fiber believe that the benefits of a super-State should be extended to people who refuse to comply with its requirements?

To return to the matter at hand, why would anyone be surprised that people who bypass some of our intricate documentation requirements, claiming benefits from a society whose rules they selectively scorn, might decide to get a bit more aggressive with the bypassing and claiming? If you punch a few holes in a multi-trillion-dollar system, don't be surprised when millions of fraudulent dollars come spilling out. If you partially wave off the rule of law for select groups, don't be surprised when they decide some other laws don't really apply to them. The very notion of "the rule of law" is fatally injured by partially waving some of it off; it's an all-or-nothing proposition, which means the Ruling Class shouldn't be selectively deciding not to enforce some of the laws it writes, or writing laws that cannot be enforced.

How can anyone logically maintain that relatively straightforward immigration laws are impossible (and maybe even immoral) to enforce, but vastly more complex and arbitrary tax laws will be enforced with brutal vigor?

How does Obama look at lawbreakers he's romanticized into better Americans than the actual citizens of the United States and tell them he'll let them commit these felonies, but not those, even though the same moral reasoning for ignoring U.S. law holds true: I did it to make a better life for my family? The mastermind of this little tax-fraud scheme will probably go down hard for raking in millions, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for tough consequences to be visited upon the illegal alien migrant workers who "kept a small fee" for helping her.
