Shooting at Plantation Quail leaves man dead; one man jailed

GREENSBORO, Ga. — A shooting at a meat processing plant near Greensboro April 4 left a 30-year-old Union Point man dead and a former co-worker jailed on murder charges, local and state law enforcement authorities say.

Greene County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said the man accused of the crimes had been living as an undocumented immigrant in the United States for the past 17 years.

The sheriff said the shooting was believed to have happened at noon at the lower processing plant of Plantation Quail, located at 1940 Ga. Highway 15 South, just on the outskirts of Greensboro.

Harrison said Rod-Riez Dameyian Tripp of Union Point was shot multiple times.

Tripp was treated at the scene by firefighters/first responders with Greene County Fire Rescue and personnel with the Greene County Emergency Medical Services. He was later taken by ambulance to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens.

Greene County Coroner Chris Peters said an emergency department physician pronounced the victim deceased at 1:45 p.m.

An autopsy was performed to determine the exact cause and manner of Tripp’s death.
Results were still pending Monday.

Harrison identified the man accused of shooting Tripp to death as 40-year-old Dimas Sanchez Ruiz of Greensboro.

Deputies from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Greensboro Police Department took the suspect into custody without incident.

Harrison said the suspect was still in the Plantation Quail parking lot when law enforcement officers arrived on the scene.

The sheriff said a 9mm handgun was later found, and he and others involved in the investigation believe that it was the weapon used in the fatal shooting.

Ruiz since has been charged with one count each of felony murder, malice murder and aggravated assault.

He was fingerprinted, photographed and jailed at the Greene County Law Enforcement Center in Greensboro.

Ruiz stood before Greene County Chief Magistrate Russell W. Wall Monday for his first appearance hearing, where he was informed of the criminal charges against him.

After the brief hearing, Wall bound the case over to Greene County Superior Court.
A motive for the shooting has not yet been established.

Greene County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Capt. Scott Smith, who heads the criminal investigations division, and several of his investigators are working closely with GBI case Agent Zack Plock to determine what might have led up to the shooting.

Harrison said he had been informed by officials with United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that Ruiz had been living illegally in the United States for the past 17 years.

“We are not investigating anything to do with his citizenship status,” Harrison said. “That’s for ICE to deal with. His biggest issue is his current charges.”

Harrison said when the 911 call about the shooting came into a dispatcher, he along with deputies and investigators and officers with the Greensboro Police Department responded.

Because of the nature of the call, the sheriff said troopers with the Georgia State Patrol post in Madison and deputies and investigators with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office also responded.

Authorities did not know at the time what sort of shooting had taken place, only that several gunshots had been heard and that the suspect was still on the scene.

Harrison said he called Mary Chandler, special agent in-charge of the GBI Region 6 Office, and she along with several other agents responded to the shooting scene as well. A crime scene specialist from the GBI Region 7 Office in Thomson also was called to collect evidence and take photographs of the crime scene.
