Wilson County Sheriff's Office On Thursday morning, Wilson County sheriff's deputies arrested Marcos Santiago-Bautista, 27, after he reportedly ran over two children, ages 5 and 10, as they were boarding a school bus on Rock Ridge Sims Road. The two victims are brother and sister, and attend Rock Ridge Elementary School in Wilson County.

The the two children were left lying in the road, as Santiago-Bautista fled from the scene in his Ford Explorer. The vehicle was later found parked behind a tobacco barn, about a mile from the scene, according to court documents.

WNEM reported Lt. Jeff Gordon of the North Carolina Highway as saying:
Based on witnesses at the scene, the bus was stopped, the lights were on and that vehicle continued on and unfortunately those two kids were struck.

The children were transported to Wake Med with several broken bones, and are currently listed in serious condition. Their mother took the two to the bus stop and witnessed her children being struck by the SUV.

Santiago-Bautista has been charged with felony hit and run, felony passing a stopped school bus, driving without a license, no vehicle registration, driving without insurance and fictitious tags. He is currently being held at the Wilson County Jail on an ICE detainer.

The suspect speaks only Spanish and an interpreter was required during his questioning. Santiago-Bautista is due in court Friday morning.

At 27 this not an underfed illegal and he is qualified to be one of Obama's Dreamers. He looks like he is living large on cash wages. His employer should be jailed and sued. No license,no tags, presented a fake registration, felony hit and run on top of being here illegally.
SUV hits brother, sister crossing road to get on school bus

    • Man charged after hitting siblings at school bus stop

SIMS, N.C. — A 10-year-old boy and his 5-year-old sister were seriously injured early Thursday morning in a hit-and-run as they were getting on a school bus in the Wilson County community of Sims - the third such incident in two weeks.

Lt. Jeff Gordon, a spokesman for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, said German Arroyo-Correa and Areli Arroyo-Correa – a fourth-grader and kindergartner at Rock Ridge Elementary School – were taken to WakeMed in Raleigh, where they were listed in serious condition Thursday afternoon.

The driver of the red Ford Explorer that hit them, Marcos Santiaga Bautista, 27, of Sims, was later found and arrested.

He was jailed under a $30,000 bond on charges of felony hit-and-run, felony passing a stopped school bus, driving without a license, failure to register a motor vehicle and displaying fictitious registration.

Gordon said there were no indications that alcohol or weather were factors in the wreck.

Investigators said the school bus had stopped outside the children's home around 6:50 a.m. and had activated its stop arm and caution lights for the siblings to cross the road when the Explorer, traveling in the opposite direction, hit the children as they crossed the street.

The driver then fled the scene, and Wilson County sheriff's deputies found him and the SUV about a mile way behind a tobacco barn.
"The troopers did a fantastic job. As soon as we got the call, troopers located evidence from that vehicle and immediately started looking for the vehicle," Gordon said.

No other children were on the bus at the time.

"We are collaborating with law enforcement and ask that you keep these students and their families in your thoughts today," a Wilson County Schools spokeswoman said in a statement.

Thursday's accident is the third in two weeks involving young students waiting for the bus.

Michael Burgess Jr., 11, is recovering from his injuries after a 16-year-old driver hit him Tuesday morning when, she said, she didn't see a stopped bus in southern Wake County because of fog.

Keith Jones Jr., of Wendell, was killed Sept. 23 after a man on his way to work hit the 13-year-old, who was waiting for the bus outside his house.

While there have been efforts in recent years to improve school bus safety, accidents and deaths continue, said Ben Matthews, director of Safe and Healthy Schools Support Division with the state Department of Public Instruction.

"A safe school bus is not going to stop a driver that's not paying attention," he said.

Matthews is afraid such accidents will only continue due to budget cuts.

"That will be a recurring theme across the state because we have had to consolidate routes, shorten routes," he said.

Gordon said the key is for drivers to pay attention and stop when a bus has activated its lights and stop arm – and for parents to teach their children how to cross the road.

"Just because the bus is stopped and the arms are activated, does not mean the motoring public is going to stop as well," he said.

An SUV suspected of hitting two children at a school bus stop was found behind a tobacco barn.

A gift from an anonymous family is left on the doorstep of the Arroyo-Correa family.

Marcos Santiago Bautista is charged with felony passing a stopped school bus, felony hit and run with failure to stop for injury, no operator's license, failure to register a motor vehicle, and displaying fictitious registration.

WILSON, N.C. -A neighbor says the mother of two Rock Ridge Elementary School students helplessly watched as her children were hit by an SUV while trying to get on their school bus.

German Arroyo-Correa, 10, and Areli Arroyo-Correa, 5, are in serious condition after the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said they were hit by an Ford Explorer while trying to board their school bus Thursday morning. Both children have been transferred to UNC Hospitals for treatment of their injuries.

Troopers said the bus was stopped on Rock Ridge Sims Road with its lights on when the SUV's driver, 27-year-old Marcos Santiaga Bautista, failed to yield to the extended stop arm, striking the two children and then driving away.

"Based on witnesses at the scene, the bus was stopped, the lights were on and that vehicle continued on and unfortunately those two kids were struck," said Lt. Jeff Gordon, with the Highway Patrol.

A spokeswoman for Wilson County Schools said the hit-and-run happened at the first stop on the bus driver's route. A neighbor, Laura Lopez, said German and Areli's mother watched in horror as her children were hit.

"The mom witnessed the whole thing," Lopez said. "She waits until they get on the bus and [then] goes to work.
"She was yelling and screaming. It was heartbreaking."

Debris from Bautista's vehicle littered the road, which helped troopers quickly track him down about a mile from the crash scene.

"They located evidence from that vehicle and found it behind a tobacco barn," Gordon said.

Bautista was charged with felony passing a stopped school bus, felony hit and run with failure to stop for injury, no operator's license, failure to register a motor vehicle, and displaying fictitious registration, the highway patrol said. His bond is set at $30,000.

The horror of the accident rippled through the Wilson community Thursday, and a heartfelt expression of sympathy was left anonymously on the doorstep of the Arroyo-Correa family.

"I was devastated. I felt really bad," Lopez said. "It makes me very angry."

The school system said the principal will remain with the family at the hospital and counselors are on hand at Rock Ridge Elementary.

Angry (Illegal) Man charged with hit-and-run in school bus stop accident

I figured this was the case when I first heard about it!

(Illegal) Man charged with hit-and-run in school bus stop accident

    SIMS, N.C. (WTVD) --

Two Wilson County students were hit by a SUV as they tried to get on their school bus Thursday morning.

The alleged hit-and-run accident happened around 7 a.m. at Rock Ridge Sims Road and Old Raleigh Road west of Interstate 95. German Arroyo-Correa, 10, and Areli Arroyo-Correa, 5, reportedly suffered broken bones and were hospitalized in serious condition. Neighbors said they are a brother and sister.

"My brother heard the mom screaming and yelling for help, so he got out, and he saw that the bus was there and the kids, they had run them over," said Laura Lopez.

Officials said the bus headed to Rock Ridge Elementary School was stopped with its lights on and stop arm extended when it happened.

The red Ford Explorer that allegedly hit the children was found about a half-mile away behind a tobacco barn at a working farm. The North Carolina Highway Patrol took Marcos Santiaga Bautista, 27, of Sims, into custody. He's charged with felony hit and run, felony passing a stopped school bus, having no driver's license, no vehicle registration, and having a fake tag. Bond was initially set at $30,000.

Troopers said Friday they have confirmed he is a fugitive with an outstanding deportation warrant. Bautista, who is a native of Mexico, failed to show up for a Non-Detention Immigration Hearing in South Carolina.

His bond was increased to $1,002,000.

It's the third time in two weeks that a child has been hit at a bus stop in the Triangle region.

On Sept. 23, 13-year-old Keith Jones Jr. was killed by a car as he waited for his bus near Wendell.

Earlier this week, 11-year-old Michael Burgess Jr. was seriously hurt in the Apex/Holly Springs area when a 16-year-old driver allegedly passed a stopped school bus.

Lt. Jeff Gordon with the North Carolina Highway Patrol said the high number of accidents in the Triangle involving children waiting at bus stops should be an alert for both parents and drivers.

"One thing that you need to do as a parent, sit down with your children, especially if they ride the school bus and are waiting to get on the school bus," said Gordon. "Tell them about the dangers that are out there. Tell them about what you need to do as a child or as a passenger. Even if the school bus stops, the stop arms out,the emergency equipment is activated, does not necessarily mean that the traffic that's approaching both from the front and the rear is going to stop, so tell your kids to look before they cross the road."

Drivers especially need to be on the lookout for school buses and obey the law that says you must stop if the red lights are on and the stop arm is extended.

"The school buses are big. They're yellow, and they're there for a reason, and that reason is simple and that's to pick kids up and drop them off. So if you see one, they're going to stop eventually, so don't try to beat the bus stop," Gordon offered.
