Suspected carjacker arrested after Vegas shootout

A man suspected of a string of carjackings in the Northwest Valley area earlier this week was caught after a shoot out with the Las Vegas Police Department.

Raul Gonzalez, 31, is suspected of carjacking nine cars and firing at two others in the Sun City and Surprise-area on Tuesday before he fled north to Vegas, committing crimes along the way, said Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Gonzalez was caught on Wednesday after he robbed a Marshall's Department store in Vegas. Gonzalez fired on police officers and was shot in the heel outside of the store, Arpaio said. The man grabbed a woman as a hostage before being tackled by Vegas police officers.

The Phoenix Police Department picked up Gonzalez in December 2005 for burglary and larceny. He was released on April 25 to immigration authorities, Arpaio said. "We don't know whether they deported him," he said.

The sheriff said he discovered the man was back after finding his fingerprints in at least one of the carjacked vehicles.

Gonzalez is being connected to an armed robbery at a Papa John's Pizza in Flagstaff and a carjacking there and in Williams, Arpaio said.

The sheriff said that Las Vegas authorities were likely to get first chance at trying the man with more serious charges that involve firing at police officers and taking a hostage.

Re: Illegal alien suspected of nine carjackings, two shootin

This is business as usual for the illegals.
So is this illegal gonna claim diplomatic immunity and get "catch and release?"

There is a solution for motorists in danger of getting car-jacked.

From South Africa comes the "Blaster" which can be fitted to your car. When the car-jacker attacks, the blaster turns the car-jacker into a crispy critter!

    This Video is worth watching:

I lived in Surprise for almost 2 yrs. Oct /02 to 02/04. Lived in a really nice area. On Grand Ave the place is crawling with illegals, hanging out on the corners waiting for someone to hire them. Crime was out of control then, no telling what is is now.
I was always afraid I might get car jacked or robbed. So I did not go out much unless someone was with me.
Of course John McCain just loves the illegals......

I wonder if the local US Attorney will be filing charges against the officers for firing their weapons at this poor guest worker.
It's like hell vomited and the Bush administration appeared.

    Count,

    I don't think so. He wasn't fleeing.

Police: Man who shot at Las Vegas officer was wanted in Arizona
    By KEN RITTER
    ASSOCIATED PRESS

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A man accused of firing 14 shots at a Las Vegas police sergeant was wanted in Arizona in a carjacking and robbery spree including a pursuit that left a deputy injured, police said.

Raul Eduardo Gonzalez, 31, was sought in several armed carjackings in Phoenix, Maricopa County and Williams, and an armed robbery of a pizza shop in Flagstaff, Ariz., Las Vegas police Sgt. Rocky Alby said Tuesday.

Alby and a sheriff's spokeswoman in Surprise, Ariz., linked Gonzalez to an Aug. 8 crash involving a Maricopa County sheriff's deputy chasing a stolen car. The deputy was treated for minor injuries, the officials said.

Clark County Sheriff Bill Young released a mall security video Monday showing an Aug. 9 shootout between a man identified as Gonzalez and Las Vegas police Sgt. Robert Schultz outside The Boulevard Mall in Las Vegas. The mall is about 2 1/2 miles east of the Las Vegas Strip.

In the black-and-white video, the man appears to wait at a corner of the building for the marked police cruiser to approach before firing several shots from a handgun. The driver's door of the patrol car opens and the car comes to a slow stop as bullets appear to hit the windshield.

Schultz, 49, a 27-year department veteran, received cuts on his face from flying glass and bullet fragments, and one bullet lodged in a headrest in the police car, Young said. Schultz fired three shots out through his windshield. One struck the gunman's left heel, police said.

The gunman limped away and took a 36-year-old woman hostage, authorities said.

Two police officers who were in the mall tackled Gonzalez as he lowered his gun, police said. The woman hostage was treated for minor injuries.

Young praised the two officers who arrested Gonzalez for their restraint. He said they would have been justified if they shot Gonzalez.

The sheriff also said it was important to release the video to show how brazen criminal have become in Las Vegas.

Young has defended his department amid criticism about a spike in the number of officer-involved shootings and about a Clark County coroner's inquest process that critics say favors the police version of events.

The shooting outside the mall was 21st involving Las Vegas police this year. Eleven people have died in police confrontations in 2006, including one who was shocked with a Taser. By comparison, Las Vegas police were involved in 13 shootings in all of 2005, nine fatal.

Gonzalez, a Mexican citizen, had been deported by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier this year, Alby said.

He spelled his last name Gonzales and used several birthdates, police said, and was initially identified following his arrest as Fidel Manuel Castro and Jesse Castro. He faces charges including attempted murder of a police officer.

Schultz remained on paid administrative leave Tuesday, pending a departmental review of the shooting.

Gonzalez was being held Tuesday in the Clark County jail, where he could not be reached for comment pending an Aug. 28 preliminary hearing in Las Vegas Justice Court. He had not been assigned a lawyer by the Clark County public defender's office.

Hearing reset for man accused of shooting at Las Vegas officer

LAS VEGAS A judge has postponed a preliminary hearing for a man who authorities say was videotaped shooting at a police car in Las Vegas early this month.

Thirty-one-old Raul Eduardo Gonzalez remained shackled in a wheelchair, listening to a Spanish-language translator as the judge set a September 26th hearing date.

Authorities say Gonzalez is a Mexican citizen who had been deported from the U-S at least once.

He was wounded in the foot in the August ninth shootout with a police sergeant.

Gonzalez is being held without bail on charges including attempted murder of a police officer.

He's also sought in an August eighth crime spree in Arizona. He allegedly carjacked eight vehicles and shot at two others in the Phoenix area, then drove to Flagstaff where he allegedly robbed a pizza parlor and carjacked another vehicle. From there, authorities say, he drove to Williams, where he allegedly carjacked another vehicle before heading to Vegas.
