Illegal aliens trying to enter arsenal detained then release
Illegal aliens trying to enter arsenal detained then released
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Illegal immigrants are being released from police custody. Sounds crazy right? Well it's happening right here in Huntsville.
A WAFF 48 News viewer who works on the arsenal sent us seven Redstone Rocket newsletters from this year.
Nearly a dozen instances of multiple illegal aliens being held then released were found in the newsletters.
Here are two examples:
April 19th - Two people tried to enter Redstone Arsenal's Gate 9. The guards determined they're illegal immigrants. They're transferred to the police station where officers find one is wanted by ICE. The other is released.
June 9th - Four lost people approached Gate 9 in a car. Guards determined all four are illegal immigrants. ICE was contacted. The driver was cited for not having a license and insurance, but all four were released.
Redstone Arsenal spokesman Dan O'Boyle said security guards check every person for current and valid identification, then verify the id's through databases.
"If it is determined that a person is an undocumented alien, that person is detained while the U.S. immigration and customs database is checked for warrants and previous deportations. If an individual has a warrant in the ICE database, the Birmingham ICE office is notified," said O'Boyle.
Redstone is doing its job by detaining them, but without ICE taking these illegal aliens into custody, officers have no choice but to let them go.
"We do have a large geographic area to cover, the resources are limited. That's sort of a problem that exists across the country," said ICE spokesman Temple Black.
Black said the agency has to prioritize its resources on the most dangerous illegal aliens.
"We're focused like a laser on those particular people that are criminals and would be hurtful to the citizens of the community," Black added.
State Senator Arthur Orr, Republican 3rd District, says that's not good enough. He said lawmakers also need to step up to tackle illegal immigration at the state level.
"There are many other things that we in Alabama can do here that have been done by other states. There again, E-Verify by employers, by government contractors and in the governments, requiring proof of identity for public benefits," said Orr.
It's a contentious debate currently being played out in the court system.
Senator Orr also said he's currently working on a bill similar to the one passed in Arizona giving local law enforcement the power to question anyone they suspect is in the country illegally.
He hopes to introduce it in the 2011 legislative session.

Unfortunately it seems that way...Sounds like they're asking for another 911.
