Body found in nose of plane at SFO
By Staff
(AXcess News) Sacramento - The body of a man was found in the nose of a plane that landed at SFO Friday morning. The flight, which originated in Shanghai, was a United Airlines 747 and the body was discovered in the wheel well in the nose when it landed at SFO.
A San Francisco International Airport spokesperson said the body of the man was discovered during a routine post-flight inspection of the plane's wheel wells of United Airlines flight 858, which landed at 7:42 a.m. after an 11-hour flight.
The SFO spokesperson said bodies have been found aboard flights in the past when people have tried to enter the country illegally by stowing away inside the wheel well of an airplane, but because the planes fly at such high altitudes, there is no air to breath and temperatures are 30 to 40 degrees below zero, so the person freezes to death.
San Mateo sheriffs officers along with immigration officials are working with the coroners office in investigating the death of the man found in the nose of the plane this morning.
A man's body was found aboard a US Airways flight at SFO in 2001, who had stowed away in the plane's nose similar to the dead man found this morning. It was the last time a body had been discovered aboard a plane landing at SFO.
An FAA spokesperson said there have been 74 stowaway's discovered aboard international flights since 1947, 60 of those died.
The Federal agency's spokesperson said they had no information as to where the man discovered inside the nose of the United Airlines flight this morning got on board the plane as many countries do not follow the same flight inspection procedures as those carried on at SFO and other domestic terminals. Had they inspected the nose of the plane before takeoff, the man would still be alive today.
What I object to is the tone at the end and the implication that WE have to be responsible for inspecting planes (which adds to cost and can lead to flight delays) because of people who are intentionally breaking the law and haven't done some very elementary checking as to the dangers of their behavior."We have a sacred, noble obligation in this country to defend the rule
of law. Without rule of law, without democracy, without rule of law being
applied without fear or favor, there is no freedom."
