Thread: Illegal immigrant ‘Dreamer’ to deliver Spanish Dem response to Trump

Democrats have tapped an illegal immigrant “Dreamer” to deliver the Spanish-language response to President Trump’s speech to Congress next week, elevating the fight over immigration policy that’s come to dominate the first weeks of the new administration.

Astrid Silva, who is in the country under protection of President Obama’s 2012 deportation amnesty, also spoke at Democrats’ presidential convention last summer.

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi also announced that former Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear will deliver the English response.

Ms. Silva said in a statement released by the two leaders that her story deserves a voice in the debate.

“President Trump would have people believe that all immigrants are criminals and that refugees are terrorists. But like my family, the vast majority of immigrants and refugees came to this country escaping poverty and conflict, looking for a better life and the opportunity to reach the American Dream,” she said.

Ms. Silva was brought to the U.S. illegally at the age of 5. She’s been an activist in the community of Dreamers, the young adult illegal immigrants who have proved to be the most sympathetic figures in the debate.

Mr. Trump has said he would treat Dreamers with “heart,” and has exempted them even as he has announced policies to restore the list of people eligible for deportation to pre-Obama administration levels.

Indeed, Dreamers caught by immigration agents are being released, just as they were under the Obama administration — though one, in Washington state, has been detained after agents said he admitted to having gang ties, which would make him ineligible for the 2012 Deferred Action program.

His case has become a rallying point for activists, who say Homeland Security has fabricated evidence against the man and are demanding his immediate release.

I can see right through this. The demwits (Democrats) are attempting to set Trump up. They figure having this DACA illegal speak following Trump will scare him into speaking kindly and gently to the American people on their cause. The Democrats are attempting to push Trump in a corner.

She should have already been deported.

I agree 1oo%. Jeff Sessions needs to hurry up on an opinion and get it to Kelly. No more dallying around. Just say it's unconstitutional and far beyond the scope of prosecutorial discretion to prioritize resources, let alone handing out work permits? That's clear discrimination against citizen workers and legal immigrant workers who need and want those jobs. It's totally outrageous!

I didn't know Sessions was working on an opinion of the programs legality. Where did you see or hear that at?

Spanish-language response? I wish we could get the word out to all Trump supporters to turn their TV off for the Dem's response. This is such an insult to every English speaking American in the country. I am going to post this to all the Trump and Conservative groups I can. I doubt if we can, but if all of a sudden TV's across this country went off it would be a really great thing.

I hadn't actually heard that was happening. I do recall some speculation in an article about it though, but nothing actually from the DOJ.

Yeah, that's what I'm referring to, that "speculation" that was in the article I posted. DOJ reviewed the Trump EO on the immigration travel ban so I'm sure they're doing a review of the DACA EO, although it appears it doesn't even need to be an EO for the DACA 2012, Kelly could do that in a "directive" memo with concurrence form DOJ. That keeps Trump out of it, if he wants to let the agencies handle it rather than handle it himself and create another band of lawsuits. Either way suits me.
