Police: Man Was Giving Birth Control Shots From His Bedroom

Morganton - The doctor is out.
Investigators with the Burke County Narcotics Task Force say a local man was giving birth control shots and other shots from his bedroom.

The task force conducted a raid at the man's Morganton home late last week.

Daniel Gomez Perez, 30, of 310 Bay St., Morganton, was charged Wednesday with practicing medicine without a license and dispensing medication without being under the supervision of a pharmacist.

He was placed in jail under $25,000 secured bond. The police also are holding the suspect for the Immigration and Naturalization Service, officials say.

Perez is not a legal resident of this country, says Morganton Public Safety Chief Mark Tolbert.

An investigator went to the house, which is less than a half mile from the Morganton Department of Public Safety on College Street, looking for a missing juvenile, Tolbert says.

The investigator found a veritable pharmacy in the front bedroom, Tolbert says.

Depo-Provera, penicillin and vitamin boosters were among the items seized in the bust, Tolbert says.

Tolbert says an investigation points to the man as a suspect in selling the birth control Depo-Provera as the "morning-after" shot for $15. Tolbert also says the man was selling vitamin shots for $100 for a series and penicillin for $20 a shot.

"This is very dangerous," he says, "someone with no medical background dispensing medication and tending to members of the Hispanic population."

Maj. Billy Bradshaw says it was almost like the suspect had a doctor's office set up in his house.

Tolbert says he has reason to believe that there are others in the city doing the same thing.

"We're trying to get word to the Hispanic community that this isn't an alternative to medical care," Tolbert says.

The missing juvenile police were searching for when they raided the suspect's house was a 15-year old girl. She was found at the house, Tolbert says. She had been missing from Asheboro since September, he says.

Tolbert says she was at the home voluntarily.

Of course La Raza will protest this guy's arrest, saying he is simply an 'undocumented' doctor.
