Immigrant in Iowa faces jail time, deportation
By staff reports
Published: July 22, 2007
A Sioux Center, Iowa, man will serve 60 days in jail for misdemeanor identify theft and will be deported.
Marco Maldonado, 22, received a suspended 10-year prison sentence on two counts of felony charges July 9, said Coleman McAllister, Sioux County attorney.
While Sioux County sheriff's deputies were investigating identity theft, they executed a search warrant at Maldonado's home. They found a falsified Nebraska identification card and another person's Social Security card, which he admitted to using to fraudulently gain work at VanVoorst Concrete in Hull.
He said in court that he bought false documents for $500 in Omaha and signed an I-9 employment verification form using a false name.
Upon his release, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will take Maldonado into custody and begin deportation proceedings.
