Immigrant verification plan likely to be official

Companies wary of federal immigration legislation may have breathed a sigh of relief when it died in Congress last week, but they may not have avoided cumbersome new mandates entirely: Many states are busy adopting requirements aimed at strengthening the process of verifying the citizenship of U.S. workers.

The federal effort was likely to include some kind of requirement that companies check information provided by job candidates against federal databases to ensure that new hires have legal status to work in the U.S. New hires who are red-flagged would have anywhere from a few days to two months, depending on the proposal, to convince the government the system's information was incorrect, or risk losing their jobs.
