Immigration: 409,849 Deported ‘Nothing to Be Proud Of’ Says Luis Gutierrez

Today, the Department of Homeland Security announced that more than 400,000 people were deported in the Fiscal Year that ended September 30, 2012. The exact figure was 409,849 individuals . The following is a statement by Congressman Gutierrez (D-IL), the Chair of the Immigration Task Force of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus

This is nothing to be proud of. In the 409,849 deportations are hardened criminals for whom I have no sympathy, but we must also realize that among these hundreds of thousands of deportations are parents and bread-winners and heads of American families that are assets to American communities and have committed no crimes.

“We must decide whether we want massive deportation to continue to be the policy of our nation or whether we want to take a smarter approach. I think we should recognize that families and individuals with deep ties to the U.S. live here and work here and yet have no way to get legal. We are deporting roughly 90,000 parents of U.S. citizens each year and often placing their children in foster care at taxpayer expense.

“Solving this problem in a humane and sensible way requires Congress to act on immigration reform and do what we have been unable to do for 25 or 30 years. In the mean time, as we have seen with the deportation relief afforded to DREAM Act eligible youth, there are things the President and immigration authorities can do to examine individual cases and provide relief from deportation where it is appropriate.”

Allowing 12-20 illegals into a country is nothing to be proud of either.

    1. Illegal for them to even be here
    2. Illegal for them to hold jobs
    3. Suck up resources that should belong to citizens - theft
    4. Are parents that citizens get to support through medical, welfare and educational benefits.

    Investigators: Obama

Smith said that the Obama team has claimed to deport about 100,000 more people than it actually has, by including people arrested at the border and sent back to Mexico among their deportation figures.

“This means a single illegal immigrant can show up at the border and be removed numerous times in a single year – and counted each time as a removal,” Smith explained. “When the numbers from this Border Patrol program are removed from this year’s deportation data, it shows that removals are actually down nearly 20% from 2009.”

Obama has conducted a balancing-act through his presidency in how he talks about high deportation figures while supporting immigration policies that expand a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants or — more recently — “lift the shadow of deportation” from certain categories of illegal immigrants by choosing not to enforce current laws.

    . . .

Smith said he found that at least 40,000 of the putative deportations cannot be accounted for, even when considering the people apprehended at the border.

“It’s bad enough that the President has neglected to enforce our immigration laws but it’s even worse that his Administration would distort statistics to deceive the American people,” Smith concluded.
