Immigration activist Vargas detained at airport in Texas

AUSTIN Texas Tue Jul 15, 2014 11:03am EDT

(Reuters) - Prominent immigration activist Jose Antonio Vargas was detained at an airport in McAllen, Texas, on Tuesday as he was passing through a security checkpoint, the immigration rights group he co-founded said.

Airport officials in the border city could not confirm that Vargas had been detained but said an unidentified individual was taken into police custody at an airport security checkpoint.

Vargas posted a picture of himself holding documents on a Define American Facebook page as he was about to go through airport security.

"The only IDs I have to show security: my Philippine passport and my pocketbook U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence, which I keep with me at all times. I don't know what's going to happen," he wrote.

Vargas is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who has written extensively about immigration.

In 1993 at the age of 12, he said goodbye to his mother and boarded a plane in the Philippines to join his grandparents in California. It would be four more years before he would learn that he was in the United States illegally.

Reporter Jose Vargas, symbol of immigration debate, detained at airport

    By CNN Staff

updated 10:06 AM EDT, Tue July 15, 2014

(CNN) -- Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and undocumented immigrant Jose Antonio Vargas was detained at a Texas airport Tuesday morning, his spokesman said.

Vargas was held at a detention center at the airport in McAllen, Texas, after he tried to fly out of the border city, his spokesman Ryan Eller said. Information on why he was detained wasn't immediately available.

Vargas wrote and directed "Documented," a film about the U.S. immigration debate and his own life story that CNN aired on June 29.

Vargas' grandfather brought him to the United States from the Philippines illegally when he was 12 years old. Vargas says he didn't know he was in the country illegally until he was 16, when he applied for a driver's license and was told his permanent residency card was bogus.

Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist who became an immigration activist after openly admitting his undocumented status, was detained by border patrol agents at a Texas airport on Tuesday as he attempted to board a flight.
A border patrol spokesperson confirmed to the Associated Press that Vargas is being held after being arrested at the airport in McAllen, Tex., but had no other details.
Vargas, who has a valid Philippine passport but not a U.S. employment visa, announced his undocumented status in a 2011 story in the New York Times Magazine and wrote a cover story for TIME a year later about his experience.
He now travels the country as an activist working to change U.S. immigration laws. On July 10 that work brought him to McAllen, which he visited with a camera crew from his advocacy organization, Define American, to document the shelters housing thousands of unaccompanied children who have fled the escalating violence in their Central American hometowns. Vargas was apparently unaware that the U.S. Border Patrol has a checkpoint set up about 45 minutes outside of the South Texas town.
“I feel stupid. I’ve been traveling around the country, visiting 43 states in like 3 years, and I’ve been flying using my Philippine passport,” Vargas reportedly wrote in a text message sent over the weekend to a Washington Post reporter. “But I’ve never been to the Texas border area. I just figured I could use the passport. But apparently I can’t because border patrol agents check foreign passports.”
Shortly before his arrest Tuesday, Vargas tweeted that he was attempting to pass through security with a pocket-sized U.S. Constitution and his Philippine passport as his only documentation:

-- Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and undocumented immigrant Jose Antonio Vargas was detained at a Texas airport Tuesday morning, his spokesman said.
This give the impression that Vargas received a Pulitzer for his immigration writings. He won as part of a news team that covered the Virginia Tech shootings.
