Improved Border Security Around Columbus

Dozens of people met Wednesday in Deming, New Mexico, as part of a task force designed to help reinforce the United States border with Mexico.

The group made up of ranchers, concerned citizens and law enforcement agents are part of the Southern New Mexico Task Force. Its mission is to find ways to secure the border.

Some recommendations proposed at the meeting include more surveillance with cameras with sensors along the border near Columbus, better lighting, and more Border Patrol agents.

Their recommendations have also led to the government installing vehicular barriers to keep illegal immigrants from driving across the U.S. Currently, 12 miles of land is secured with the barriers. More than 100 more miles of barrier are expected to be installed.
