Mexico rules out reports of a caravan asylum deal amid 'delicate' talks with the US

    • Mexico said Saturday that a plan to be a safe third country for asylum claimants in the U.S. were "ruled out," following reports in the Washington Post of a deal with the Trump administration.

    • Sanchez told Reuters ongoing talks with the United States on the situation of migrant caravans were "very delicate."

Mexico's incoming interior minister, Olga Sanchez Cordero, said Saturday that a plan for Mexico to be a safe third country for asylum claimants in the U.S. were "ruled out," following reports in the Washington Post of a deal with the Trump administration.

Sanchez told Reuters ongoing talks with the United States on the situation of migrant caravans were "very delicate."

Citing Mexican officials and senior members of president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's transition team, the newspaper said the agreement would break with long-standing asylum rules and mount a new obstacle to Central American migrants attempting to reach the United States and escape poverty and violence.

Reached for comment by Reuters, incoming deputy interior minister Zoe Robledo said details of the "Remain in Mexico" scheme were still being worked out.

He confirmed the plan in essence foresaw migrants staying in Mexico while asylum claims are being processed, and said the incoming government wanted to find jobs for them in sectors that are short-staffed, such as maquila assembly plants.

"What we're aiming for is that people leaving their countries due to security issues or violence can find a place to stay in Mexico if that is their decision," Robledo said.

Lopez Obrador has vowed to try to eliminate the causes of migration by creating more jobs and improving living conditions in Mexico and Central America.

In exchange, he hopes U.S. President Donald Trump and the Canadian government will agree to help spur economic development in the region.
Outgoing President Enrique Pena Nieto has also sought to stem the flow of migrants north by offering jobs to them, and has received backing from the private sector in his efforts.

Olga Sanchez Cordero, Mexico's incoming interior minister and the top domestic policy official for Lopez Obrador, who takes office Dec. 1, told the Washington Post the plan, known as Remain in Mexico, was a "short-term solution."

"The medium- and long-term solution is that people don't migrate," Sanchez Cordero said. "Mexico has open arms and everything, but imagine, one caravan after another after another, that would also be a problem for us."

The paper said that according to the outlines of the plan, asylum applicants at the border will have to stay in Mexico while their cases are processed, potentially ending the system Trump decries as "catch and release" that has until now generally allowed those seeking refuge to wait on safer U.S. soil.

Mexico, listen to me. It doesn't matter today what you and your crummy people did to the United States yesterday and for the past 40 years. Don't think that because your citizens with the support of your government did to the US exactly what these people are doing to your country now means you have to be stupid and let them in or host them or do anything else for these people to keep from being hypocrites. You're hypocrites all the way up and down the line. Accept that FACT, then forget about it, focus on today, focus on tomorrow, there is no glory, wisdom or benefit for you to be wailing around about "open arms", that's silly, stupid and childish.

You're going to have lots of really HUUUGE problems if you don't wise up, stop the gibberish and get these caravans and illegal aliens out of your country and back to wherever they came from, because trust me, they are not coming in to the United States.

The Mexican government does not care what you think about this or anything else, and they are not reading this. Just like the U.S. government.

It is difficult to understand how anyone can say----trust me, they are not coming in to the United States.

Just today we have reports of one throwing rocks at BP, setting a tree on fire. a woman being impaled falling off the fence, and the usual activity along the 1900+ miles of border.

Close the border...do not let any of them in.

Mexico offered them asylum and work.

    Take it or go home!

We have consulates there. They can apply in Mexico, get investigated, vetted and thorough medical exam. No diseases!

We cannot have 1,000s of caravans shop up on our doorstep!

If Mexico lets them in...Mexico can keep them!

People from overseas apply for asylum on their soil where they are vetted. These people are no different! They should stay home and apply. NO applications at Ports of Entry. We do not have the capacity or the money to handle this!

They are liars...go home and mouth off on your President's doorstep and effect change in your country.

We owe them nothing! Shut this stupid program down and defund it.

We have over 700,000 backlog! We have 25 million illegals, visa overstays, TPS, refugees and asylum liars to deport.

We have millions of DACA and DAPA to deport!

END THIS INVASION OF OUR COUNTRY!

22 TRILLION IN DEBT...WE DO NOT NEED MORE BREEDERS ON WELFARE AND FOOD STAMPS!
ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

DO NOT REWARD THEM - DEPORT THEM ALL

    (snip)

The newspaper also quoted Sanchez as saying: “For now, we have agreed to this policy of Remain in Mexico.”

Sanchez did not explain in the statement why The Washington Post had quoted her as saying there had been agreement.

A perfect example of an official talking out of both sides of her mouth. Apparently confusion reigns in Mexico. Not a surprise really. Perhaps a verbal temporary agreement was reached to deal with the current problem, but not an official policy at this point.

So what? That was just rude. Maybe it makes him feel better to address his post to them. Leave the guy alone. Are you the arbiter of how posts should be written now? Besides, you have no effing idea of who's reading these posts. You must think someone is, otherwise you wouldn't be posting 89,000 freaking times. If you think posting here is such a waste of time, maybe you should stop.
